Systems Analysis

May as well start this one off again - what kit you all got?

I suggest just listing our systems here, not getting into big discussions and tangents as it makes finding stuff easier if we keep it small.

Tony.

Right, here goes with my system:

CD Player- Rega Planet. For a cheap-ish player, it still surprises me with what it can do. Even so, the upgrade bug is starting to bite.

Amp- Electrocompaniet ECI-2. I think i'll probably hang on to this a little longer,as i'm well pleased with it.

Cables- Naim NACA5 (2x3.5m),Chord Chrysalis and my own interconnects (made very cheaply from Maplin gear and outperforms the Chord co stuff I might add)

Speakers- DIY jobbies, using Audax carbon fibre units in a hybrid of two Hi-fi world designs. See my web page for the specifics.

Posted on: 09 August 2000 by Tim Oldridge

CDSII, 82, NAPSC, XPS and 180 on standard size 5 shelf cherry Quadraspire stand

Rega Planar 3 (with Ortofon MC 15 Super) and Hicap on narrow 2 shelf cherry Quadraspire stand

Grey (not lavender) Naim interconnect, black Snaics, black Burndy, white NAC5 speaker cable (apparently not the latest and best) and Musicworks mains block and leads

SBLs

In a cupboard somewhere - an Aiwia (sp?) cassette deck and a lowly tuner (?Denon)

Hi-Fidelics!

Here is my current audio equipment (in brackets the history):

Naim CDS 2 (from CDI - CD2 - CDX - CDX & XPS)
Naim NAC 82 with SuperCap (from 72 with 0 - 1 - 2 HiCaps)
Naim NAP 250 (from NAP 180)
Naim SBL black (bass driver up grade)
Naim Headline with HiCap
Grado RS-2 Headphones

Naim black SNAIC's, grey (lavender) interconnects and NACA5 cables.
USM Haller System Rack with custom made spikes.

Next steps could lead to:

Swap the 82 to 52 (any NAC52/NAP500 owners want to upgrade to "NAC500"?)
Activating the SBL's with SNAXO and another 250
Swap the SBL to NBL (below active 250 is not much, as far as I heard?)
The dark side of the moon (anyone was there)

Input of other addicts aprechiated.

To keep it short, I left out all t he LO-FI stuff before and aside.
So sorry - only one single listening room (but good stuff baby).
Interested in HomeCinema - Beam, DVD, FireWir e and so on.
Perhaps later, due to my lo bank account...
but my V8 Chevi convertible makes nice sounds too!

happy listening

Adrian

Backup system under the roof (when doing DIY, you need a serious backup system, in fact this was the first system that gave me fun in the 80ies):

Thorens 124, SME3012-2, Denon 103
Mission PCM-II
Naim 101/Snaps,
Naim 32.5, Snaps2, 140
Linn Kan clones
Tripod Stands for the electronics
home made stand for the turntable

main system no.1 in the lounge:

Kuzma Stabi and Stogi, Scheu-Benz low output MC cartridge with Gyger S diamond (this is what I call wife friendly hi-end record player)
Sansui TU9900 tuner,
California Audio Labs Delta CD transport,
Musical Fidelity Digilog DAC (heavily mod'ed)
Kaneda preamp (DIY solid state),
tube power amp with a lot of 6BQ5 tubes (single ended 3.8 watts each channel)
big horn speakers (Altec 414 woofer, Altec 802 driver, JBL2370 horns, cabinet is 150 liters big)

main system no.2 in the basement (I am working on this, it should be running at the end of the year):

Scheu DIY turntable with 420mm diameter acrylic platter, 80mm high, 12kg weight, inverted bearing with ceramic ball, string-driven external motor unit.
SME3012-2 tonearm, Denon 103 cartridge.
Jensen (USA) double screened moving coil transformers.
tube preamp with E88CC, 6H30 tubes, all transformer coupled.
tube power amp with 211 tubes as power and driver tube, which gives 2*25 watts single ended (will be ready at the end of the year).
very big horn speakers with TAD 4002 driver and JBL 2360 horn (woofer is still to be determined and bought.)

other things lying around: Naim Aro (since I replaced the 320mm Scheu platter with a 420mm, I have no use for this, what a pity!), SAEC 407-EX, Wheaton Triplanar, Fidelity Research FR-64FX.

vinyl: more than 2000 records
CD: about 200 silver discs

What am I looking for:
12 inch tonearms to run on my Scheu.
Woofers for my very big horn system

My system is as follows:

pre amp: NAC 92 + FLATCAP
power amp: NAP 90/3
source: CDI
speakerS: Monitor Audio Studio 2 + REL Stadium 2

I am just so happy with this system, but I know there's plenty of upgrading possible. My next upgrade will be a change of speaker cable to NAC-A5. Suggestions on the best path to follow after this are always welcome!
