Systems Analysis

May as well start this one off again - what kit you all got?

I suggest just listing our systems here, not getting into big discussions and tangents as it makes finding stuff easier if we keep it small.

Tony.

Hi!

Within 5 months I have sold most of my previous gear and bought some perfect 2nd hand stuff. The total cost of the upgrade was not much, the sound so much better! My new system is:

Pre: NAC 102 + napsc + HiCap
Power: NAP 180
Sourve: CDI & NAT-03
Speakers: Intro's (external x-over)
Cables: NAC-A5, grey SNAIC's

Hopefully I'm done for a while now....

Regards, Bas

Actually my system has made hardly any progress since the Systems Analysis thread on the old forum. But it has all been shifted to a new flat, and is only just settling down after six months.

Sources: CDS2/XPS, LP12/Cirkus/Valhalla/Aro/17D2, Walkie Pro

Amps: NAC82/SuperCap/2x135s

Speakers: SBLs (beech)

Racks: Mana wall shelves under CDS2 and LP12; NAC82 on Mana Reference; XPS, S/Cap and 135s on Mana four-tier amp rack. Occasional use of Townsend Seismic Sink when feeling tweaky.

Cables: Black Snaics, NACA5. Sometimes get old DNM solid core out between CDS2 and 82. Chord Chrysalis for Walkie Pro.

Forthcoming upgrades: Mana Soundbases under SBLs, Armageddon, Prefix, second hand NAC32.5 (I just want one).

Sources:

LP12 (1997 with 1992 de-Cirkused subchassis) / NAPSA (hand-built) / ARO / Troika c. 1992 / Prefix "K" on double-stacked Mana Reference Table Table (Phase Three), no baseboard, 3M feet

CDS II / XPS

NAT 03 (began life as an IXO)

+ Onkyo tape deck / Funai VCR / some synthesisers / Power Mac G4 + Sonorus STUDI/O audio card

Amplification:

NAC 52 + SUPERCAP
SUPERCAP + S-NAXO 3-6 DBL
2 x NAP 250
2 x NAP 135

all on (ferrous) Target HE stands with MDF shelves (equipment shifted to right to avoid flux effects with transformers), though the CDS II sits on Origin Tripod laminated board atop inverted Series 3 bump-on feet--all plugged into Wiremold L10320 nine-outlet power strip ("mains block", for those east of the pond).

Loudspeakers:

Cherry DBLs, 5m NACA 5 (black) in 11' x 14' room with plaster / hardwood floors / minimal decoration.

Headphone setup:
Headline + NAPSC (choice regs, man!)
Beyer DT 931s (thanks, Ken!) or AKG K240DF

Bathroom MP3 system:
(emanates from bedroom)
Apple iBook
NAIT (I)
Linn Kans (mk I B110s + Hiquphon tweets) + stands

Next upgrade after getting out of debt:
AV2 processor + ancillary video equipment?!
record storage racks
better cartridge (Lyra Helikon Blue, perhaps?)
Studer A-8xx 2" tape machine (trade for left arm and leg)

A bit on the "Round Earth" side though.
Source 1: Rega P25/Elyse.
Source 2: Naim CD5/Flatcap 2
Amplification: Densen B200/300, Rega Ear, Rega Fono.
Speakers: Rega Naos.
Cables: Naim NACA5.
Interconnects: Nordost Solar Wind.
Equipment Support: Not Hutter, Mana or Quadraspire: Optimum Prestige.

Dave,

Why do you want a Studer 2" tape machine? Apart from it looking like a washing machine with VU meters, what would you use it for? I'm curious.

For the same thing that anyone else who owns a multitrack tape recorder uses it for:

RECORDING

with a bit of re-building should it turn out to be an older A-80 unit. I've got access to a fair bit of digital stuff, but it would be good to have a "technician's grade" (i.e., not smoked over or spilled onto) analog machine available for use. Certainly you've seen the condition that many machines are left in for clients....

Dave Dever, NANA

P.S. Someone just clued me into a magnetic tape manufacturing facility in Russia that I will investigate as an alternate source for media--I gather that tape is still used for laboratory instrumentation recorders.

pt II, thanks to the modem...

Mick-

As a technician, tape machines and FM tuners are the last frontiers for me to learn--I briefly worked as an assistant broadcast engineer in college; as an occasional (more frequent than not) recording engineer, it would be handy to have a benchmark machine for a future facility, someday.

David:

Just looking over your sources and this caught my attention - "NAPSA (hand-built)".

I'm curious as to what this is? a replacement for the Armageddon?

Paul

Posted on: 03 February 2001 by David Dever
Paul-

Just an older Armageddon (line filter, illuminated display) re-built to current specs and cosmetic (that is, practically re-wired, offending parts removed).

I doubt that anyone who works for Naim or NANA is hiding anything in terms of unauthorized modifications--if they were any good, they'd make it into production, right?!

All my stuff is stock--it wouldn't be fair otherwise.

Dave Dever, NANA

P.S. NAPSA = "Naim Audio Power Supply Armageddon", as NA PST = "...Tuner" and NAPSC = "...Control". Armageddon gets too long to type, sorry for the arcane acronyms.

Hello, Stefano.

I was wondering how your Nait-2 deals with the
SF speakers.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the sensitivety of the SF "Minima amators" too low for a 15-watt amp ?
I also own a Nait-2 and my dealer recomended to use some speakers with a sensetivety of min. 89db

(on the other hand, there are also people who
recommend Linn Kan's to go with a Nait-2 and they're also pretty hard to drive. ..hmm,weird)

O,well

Greetings,
Alco.

Thanks Andrew,

..but the Linn stands are not available in Canada according to the Canadian Linn distributor here in Vancouver. The new stands are UKP165 plus UKP80 shipping plus duty plus 14% taxes...... It gets bloody expensive! Hence my search for a used pair. Its at times like this that I wish I still lived in the UK =8)

Its been seven months since my first posting into the Systems Analysis thread and since then my system has evolved (if not transformed) by such an amount that I'm prepared to say that in comparison my previous system was pants.

Here is where I'm at now:

CDSII/XPS
52/Supercap
NAP250
IBLs

CDSII and 52 head units on Mana 2-tier amp-stand
XPS/Supercap/250 on Mana 4-tier amp-stand
IBLs on Mana Soundbases

All Mana at phase 1, amp-stands sat on a dedicated section of floor (5' x 3' MDF, 3" thick, bonded to concrete house foundation, clear of all walls and other sections of floor)

MusicWorks 6-way block, elsewhere standard Naim leads throughout.

Dedicated mains spur. Dedicated earth.
