Systems Analysis

May as well start this one off again - what kit you all got?
I suggest just listing our systems here, not getting into big discussions and tangents as it makes finding stuff easier if we keep it small.
Tony.

- LP12/Lingo/Cirkus/Ekos/Arkiv B
- CDSII (rebuilt from CDSI)/CDPS
- 82/HiCap/180
- Intro II, tweaked a bit. Sometimes LS3/5A.
- Headline/HiCap/AKG K100
- Black SNAIC from 82 to HiCap, grey HiCap to 180. Grey Burndy to CDSII, grey from CDS to 82. NACA 5.
- Mana copies (don't know what 'phase'). One for LP12, one for CDS. Wall table for 82, floor table for CDPS. HiCaps and 180 on home made chipboard things. Telephone book under Lingo!
- Some strange 'HiFi' power distribution block from the then Naim friends at Phonosophie.
- 3 * 3.7 * 2.4 meter room. Unorthodox speaker placement along two walls. Some room treatment, mostly to tame lower frequiencies.
- Neighbours. Sometimes works from home when they are not (insert mental picture of air guitar hero here)!
- 900 LP:s, ~400 CD:s.
Lingo disconected from mains when not in use. That's most of the times.
Jean-Marc, I liked your serious 78 rpm player!

The tweeks I have done is all simple and reversible. So don't be afraid to try them.
- My first tweak was inserting a ball of damping material inside the speakers around the port/slit area. The reason for this, of course, is to damp the bass reflex resonance. I think that the success of this is room dependent, i.e. this is a way to tune the speakers to the room. In my case it had the effect of making the bass faster and, strangely enough, the midrange a bit slower. But, IMHO, this makes the speed more even across the range.
This should work with Credos and Allaes to.
- Into II:s does not have a crossover on the bass unit. Fine, the bass is direct coupled to the amp. But it makes the upper midrange a bit harsh, I think. I simply put a terry towel over the bass drivers (and not the tweeters). It worked! I have now fabricated bits of towels that fits inside the grills.
- I don't like bass reflex speakers. How do I make them into sealed boxes? Silicon in the bass reflex slit. That seemed messy. So I tried with masking tape on the outside, all the way around the slit. It works.
Something like the new PIP:s for the SL2:s which makes the slit very thin seems like a better idea.
I have a pair of the original SBL woofers (the ones with pressed steel baskets) hanging around...

Just replaced the burndy on the 52, which is as good an excuse as any to update my entry here. Most of this is also shown in my profile, which is something I'd encourage you all to do, as it's very convenient to be able to see this from a single click.
Sources:-
CDSii (upgraded from CDSi) / CDPS / black Burndy. Lilac interconnect.
LP12 (Cirkus) / Ekos-II / AT-ART1 (retipped twice by Expert Stylus) / Armageddon / Stageline (K) powered from 52.
Amps:-
52 / 52PS / HiCap / S-NAXO3-6 / 6x135s / black burndy & SNAIC-s / 8m runs of A5.
Speakers:-
Naim DBLs, black, 1994? Strangely, these have no serial numbers.
Tables:-
LP12 on custom table.
CDSii / 52 / SNAXO on a three-tier AF Starbase. Glass & 3x ball-nutters under the CDSii instead of the standard Base-01 MDF platform. 4xBN's don't work. Mana glass doesn't work.
HiCap / 52PS / CDPS on a separate three-tier Starbase.
Armageddon & Stageline on another separate two-tier Starbase.
135s on a 6-tier AF Base rack.
All Naim gear except CDSii & CDPS serviced mid-1999. CDPS & 52PS re-capped August 2001.
Essential tweaks:-
LP12 as far from amps as possible.
Cable dressing. Recent discovery. Like it.
Unlock the collars on all DIN plugs. N-i-c-e.
2nd system:-
Arcam Alpha CD and Black Box III, NAIT-2, Kan-I's.
