Kid-proofing

Posted by: Simon-C on 26 March 2004

With all the recent talk of toddler-carnage I wondered about the logic of putting some of my kit in an enclosed rack. QAV cabinet looks good but I have noticed the Arca range which IMO may provide the solution.

Anyone have any comments about cabinets re isolation etc?

Either it is prone to damage, or you stick it in a cabinet. Isolation is not worth considering because it's not a long term thing. My son is 18 months which is the worst period, but by the time he's 3 it will be safe again. I have a seperate music room with a lock on the door - but I am having trouble with her indoors as she seems to think I have taken over a room for myself, and she wants it back as a "family room"!

My kit sits on top of our projection tele - well out of reach. The grilles stay on the speakers.

I hope that is enough...

My son is 13 months so the test is just starting! The other challenge is keeping the remote out of reach...

Rasher,

Sounds like you have one child. Safety won't arrive until he moves out. Even then, he'll probably think anything you have - at least in the hifi area - is fair game for borrowing.

All,

I found tht wall shelves were very useful. That is, I found them useful after I learned not to place anything amenable to climbing close to the shelf. I still have a picture in my mind of my very happy 2-year old perched precariously on a small table, with his finger in the take-up reel of my tape deck and 100s of feet of tape flowing through the room.

Also, we got him a small record player and lots of kids records, so he could play records, too. He ruined very few of mine. Of course, he couldn't wait to get to the Thorens.

If you enjoy listening to music, your kid will pick that up and mimic you. If s/he finds s/he likes music, too, you may find you have an ungrateful mini-hifi nut on your hands.

I've been basically unemployed for over 2 years, and my kid wants to sell his Spendor S100s instead of give them to me. After all he put me through! Imagine! And when he was 5, he promised to make enough money by the time he was 30 so that we (parents) could retire in style.

And he has multiple systems, all better (and cheaper) than mine....Except for the ARO, that is, which remains sublime.

I still feel parenthood was a good choice; it's just that I can't figure out why!

Regards.

Phil

Phil - I have a 6 yr old girl who not only has always understood not to touch, but also acts as security guard. Smile

Phil

Maybe quite a high % of them come out of the same mold. My eldest has always felt "what's dad's is mine, what's mine is only mine, not Dad's and what neither of us has dad should get for me" He has ended up as the manager of a HiFi shop which unfortunately will have nothing to do with Naim. He thinks I'm twisted, he has kitted himself out with Linn.

Still he has got me a decent discount on a couple of the other elements of my system., so I guess you could call that payback sort of.

My solution to Kid-proofing was poverty!!
The kids & the mortgage & London commuting etc basically solved the problem of how to protect the HiFi. I did'nt have any!!!

I have a quadraspire cabinet that has kept the contents safe from my little one for the last four years as it has a lock and key! I hope my avatars are made of real wood though as im touching them at the moment in the hope that i havent just cursed myself!!! My stand mounted speakers did bite the dust, the shinny tweeter buttons proved irrisistable! and they rattled thanks to round shapes being posted in the port holes! There was also a nasty incident involving food following a moment of weakness when i allowed the tweenies CD to spin in my beloved HiFi.. but ive described that one in another post already...
My main worry is that thanks to upgradeitus i have as many boxes ontop of the cabinet as inside it!! but i have made sure that the ones on top have no slots, drawers or volume controls! Fingers crossed!!
