Double Wow!

Posted by: cens on 21 April 2004

I traded in my 282 for a 252, which arrived on Saturday. I've been running it in non-stop since then. Although it sounded pretty good right out of the box, its coherence faded for a day or so and is now returning. Sounded pretty amazing tonight. Wow -- can't believe it is probably going to improve even more, even if only incrementally.

I finally got a chance to really hear a new CD I picked up. That was the second "wow" of the night. I'd read a snippet on sixmoons.com about Dulce Pontes and snagged one of her albums. If you haven't heard her, she has an absolutely amazing voice. Even if Portuguese quasi-fado isn't your cup of tea, might be worth a listen just to hear her sing.

Chris

For 2k difference between 252 and 282, I thought this was one of the better bang for the buck

'wow' was exactly what I said when I switched from 282 to 252.

Enjoy!

...agree, however the best bang for buck is the next step CDX2/XPS2 -> CDS3/XPS2 (once you have the 252) which is also approx £2K....

I have to agree that $2000 seems like a reasonable amount for the improvement between the 282 and 252 (reasonable, that is, if you are already an incurable audiophile).

Don't have a Naim CD player so can't comment on the CDX2->CDS3 jump.

What are you using for a CD player, then?

Kuma,

I have a Cary 306/200. I bought it over a Naim CDX a couple of years back. To my ears it had better extension on both ends than the CDX and, overall, just sounded more musical. It is now "tweaked" quite effectively with Symposium Rollerblocks, a TG Audio SLVR power cord, and a Shunyata Hydra.

I'm pretty happy with the Cary. That said I might demo a CDX2 at some point to see if the new model and synergy take the cake, but doubt it would work better for me, at least not without an XPS. With an XPS, who knows? Beyond the bank account right now, having just spent a fair amount on the 252/250.2 combo I now have.

Chris

cens,

I am sure CDX2 sounds lot different from your Cary.
for sure you'll pick up a pace, but not sure where the rest of chips fall.

Worth a try, tho.

Kuma,

I should probably just skip the CDX2 and, when my account is reloaded, listen to the CD3 and other players at that level. More likely to find something that moves me by going up instead of sideways.

Chris,

Skip a bare CDX2 and start from CDX2/XPS2.

They are worthwhile. I could justify the latter, but not the former.

What non-Naim players have you had, if any?

Chris,

The one I used in the main rig for last 5 years is the Krell kps25s.

Others I have lived with:
Krell kps28c
Linn Ikemi
Linn Mimik
Wadia 21
Sonic Frontier SFCD1
Primare 20D
Micromega Stage 2
Audiolab 8000CD

Others I have home demoed, too many to mention.

Kuma,

That's quite a laundry list. I've actually been relatively stable on the CD front:

Arcam Alpha 9
Naim CD5 w/ Flatcap
Cary 306/200

Maybe I need to churn my players a bit more often? :-)

cens,

Actually, I've only changed a CD player once in the main rig from Wadia 21 to Krell kps25s over 5 years ago.

...till I've tried CDX2. Smile
It was originally intended for a second system to replace the kps28c. It did not work out too well but out of curiosity when I put a bare CDX2 in the main rig before it was all set to be returned to the dealer.

I've heard something good that was quite special. A bare CDX2 lacked few things to replace a long standing kps25s, but adding on an XPS2 surpassed my expectation and the combo stayed.

If it weren't for this 'fluke' incident, I had no plan to replace the kps25s. Altho, updated Krell narrows the gap quite a bit. ( 5+ year-old digital still holding its own )

Why this many pIayers?
I used to have two other systems in different locations. And few had mechanical problems and I was forced to replace 'em. Primare was a bad idea. I purchased it without listening. It stayed no more than a month before was replaced in a hurry.

Digital dollars do not go far and when you get to semi-silly range, you get very little out relative to what you pay. But for me finding *the* right digital source I like was/is important since I have no intension of having a vinyl rig. ( untill, HD server takes over and I gain a space on a top shelf. Wink )

Get the one that you like and works in your system and stay with it. As long as the rest of the system remains consistant, I don't see the point of changing the source often.

Besides, after hearing all these players over the years, there aren't many CD players I can live with or spend my money on.

But then you'd need your special audiophile-approved HD rack. Smile

Words to save money by, if I could only convince myself that the one I have now, which I really enjoy, is good enough.

Chris,

If you are enjoying it, why it's not good enough? Confused

cens,

Hi there. Could you tell me what improvements you hear between 282+S/CAP and 252?

Thanks

Karl

Kuma,

I certainly enjoy the Cary 306/200. Just get that itch every once in awhile that says "you could have something better." It is easy enough to fight as long as I don't have any "excess" money sitting around. Smile

Desert Rat,

I'm not the best at putting these things into words, but overall everthing that is good about the 282 becomes bigger, stronger, and more solid, while at the same time more detailed, delicate, natural, and nuanced. If I'm listening analytically -- difficult given how easy it is to become immersed in the music -- I can hear extra depth and structure to each note top-to-bottom, a more natural sense of decay and general presentaton, and a soundstage that is a wide and as deep as the recording and my room probably allow.

I doubt that description helps much, but I certainly recommend giving the 252 a try if funds allow. Similarly, I would avoid listening to a 252 if funds don't allow for buying it. Frankly I can't imagine anyone who likes music and stereo enough to be posting here thinking the 252 isn't worth the difference in cost.

Regards,

Chris

Chris,

Thanks for that, actually I thought that was a very usefull decription. I've actually got one on order - thought I'd beat the price hikes - so it sounds like I have something to look forward to.

Take care.

Karl,

That's why I got mine so quickly after getting a 282 originally. Like Kuma, I think you're in for a real pleasant surprise.

Chris
