DVD Question (More I'm afraid)

OK,

More DVD dilemmas

Does a DVD player with the 6 pre-outs for each channel actually pump out the DTS processed sound or just the 5.1 to each channel? Or is this selectable within the DVD?

Help appreciated,

Jim

If it has the DTS logo, Yes, both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1.

How much do you want to pay?
What are you going to attach the audio output to?
What are you going to play most Music or Film?
Are you aiming to mix down to stereo or are you aiming to go surround sound?
What are you going to connect the DVD video output to?
A TV?

Sorry to ask so many questions but there are ridiculously cheap DVD players in the Tesco's or you can pay a couple of thousand and get a Video nuts dream.

give us a somewhere to start

OK,

Front end will be out of a 72/250/Hi Cap

Rear end will be budget set up, but will be surround sound. I have a one box does all DVD player/amp/receiver at the moment, and am starting on the upgrade path.

Content: Mostly for concert DVD's and occasional movies.

DVD output: Widescreen TV. Front L and R preamps to the 72 and the SCART to the 'one box does all' which will supply the rear/centre/sub for the time being. (I'm assuming this is possible).

Complicated I know!!!!!! But I have to start somewhere.

Cost? well no more than £200 - £250 and it has to be multi region. Progressive scan would be a bonus.

Thanks,

Jim

According to my trusty HiFi Choice they like these two:

1) Pioneer DV565A = 250GBP - of which they say "Do-it all universal player is a decent performer with all disc types & superb value for money"
2) Cambridge Audio DVD57 = 200GBP - of which they say "DVD-Audio, progressive scan pictures & good performance at a silly -low price, Fantastic value for money"

I reckon both will have 5.1 analog signal outs. Just talk nicely to the dealer and usually they will make them "multiregion" while you wait, after you have paid.

I assume you have 5.1 "pre-in" sockets on your cheap combined player/amp. If not you will have a prblem connecting the rear channels and the sub-woofer.

Thanks for those.

I was going to use the SCART out on the DVD for the input to the cheap combo unit. A bit basic I know.

Only thing I'm not sure of is will the cheap combo be able to decode the SCART supply from the DVD into the dts/5.1.

Priority is getting the front end into the Naim amps tho.

Basically NO!

A Scart "OUT" carries at most stereo with picture to a stereo TV. I don't think your cheap combo will have a genuine Scart "IN", if it has anything it is a Scart "pass thru'" which basically allows you to pass a signal from say a sattelite receiver or a DVD thru and out the scart that goes to the TV. Even if it does have a Scart "IN" (most unusual) it will only carry a mixed down stereo signal.
The only way to get multichannel would be if it was possible to "break in" to the point in the combo where the multichannel is fed to the amps, which would require a circuit diagram and may not be possible even then since it may use IC's to do the amping.

I think what you will end up with is only sttereo unless you by a cheap multichannel amp.

You can feed the "mixed down" stereo signal to your NAIM kit thru' the pre-outs on the DVD player for the front left & right channels into the 72 and that's about it as it stands.

If you have a stereo amp around you could rig it up to do the rear left & rear right channels but it would be fiddly to get the sound balanced between front and rear channels

Hmmmmm the plot thickens.

Looks like I'll be needing the surround amp then for the rears/centre and sub.

Life is never easy is it??

Thanks Geoff btw!!!!

Look for some used 140's they are ideal for rears and centre. They are nice and compact.
I bi-amp my centre from a one 140 and have another positioned at the back of the room feeding the rears. If you really want a sub then the REL 201 is neat and compact if a little pricey
