Safe DIY disconnection of IR receiver on NAIT 3r

Posted by: Potiriadis on 06 April 2004

Dear Forum

Further to my recent post on wife safing a hifi system I have come to the conclusion that the best way forward is to actualy disable the remote sensor completely. On a previous amp I did this with the careful placement ofa velcro cover ofver the sensor. This Heath Robinson solution was perfectly adequate on my previous budget amp, but is not desireable for my NAIM kit. I was wandering how easy it would be to simply disconnect the IR sensor inside the case. Is this something I can do with a pair of pliers or should I tahek the unit into my local dealer. I almost never use the remote on the NAIT, prefering the tactil pleasure of the volume and selction controls on the unit.

I think your problem with other remotes can be solved by Naim.

I was under the impression that they could do a PIC update to change the frequencies of the remote.

Give Naim a call and see what they have to say.

Perhaps Richard could comment

Hmmm, covering the IR sensor window with a bit of black sticky tape vs. considering opening up the amp and taking a pair of pliers(?) to its innards.

Perhaps the wife should be protecting the stereo from the husband?

Some thoughts:
1) Perhaps you could get a replacement Nait 3 fascia that doesn't have the IR window.
2) Why not swap the amp (I know somebody with a 62/140 who would like a Nait 3R).
3) You could try Naim for an IR mod (I think mention has been made here of their CD players being reprogrammable).
4) You could get elaborate and spend hundreds of pounds on IR translators and hide things in cupboards with IR emitters.

Another vote for the black sticky tape on the IR window.

Hi Potiriadis,

I had to laugh when I read Craig's comment about the wife protecting the stereo - I was beginning to think the same!!

If I remember correctly, the IR detector on a Nait 3r is quite visible, so there's nothing to be lost in covering it with an exact same size piece of tape. If it doesn't work you've lost all of 5 minute's work with no risk of damage etc.

Cheers!
