Quincy Jones conducts Miles Davis & Orchestra playing the arrangements of Gil Evans, Montreux 1991

Posted by: Peter Stockwell on 08 April 2004

Just watched this on TV, well, recorded to DVD-RAM from the digital cable box (Mezzo, French cable channel). I was really looking forward to this, but found it a let down. The music was unquestionably beautiful, but sounded restrained and controlled, and not what I anticipate when I listen to the recordings (Birth of the Cool, Miles Ahead, Porgy & Bess & Sketches of Spain).

Has anyone else seen the show or listened to the CD that's available of this event ?

Quincy is no longer really interested in this kind of stuff and I'm sure it's all done as part of some tribute celebration. Pretty pointless in my view.

There is however a supposedly good album of Miles playing with an orchestra in the late 80s conducted by Mikkelborg, I believe.

I think the Mikkelborg, might be 'Aura' ? If so, then Miles siad he was proud of the results in his autobiography.

Quincy proclaimed that he'd wanted to direct Miles with the orchestrations of Gile Evans for 15 years or more.

I listened to this on my TV rig. So it was recorded from Digital TV cable box to technics DVD-RAM recorder back to the cable box and then to an EL-34 push pull amp driving B&W LM1s, not exactly the top in AV, but Dianne Reeves recorded in the same way was much punchier.

I'm just trying to get a 2nd opinion on the Montreux recording. Solea and Summertime came across quite well, but the rest was, well, limp to translate the 'avis' of my wife.

Thanks Hock.

I think I have this on LP, I like it, but then there's not an album of his I don't like.
