Rega P9 colored wool mat?
Posted by: gavagai on 25 March 2004
Hello,
Does anybody have any information on this? Does the rega p9 have a different mat than the planar 25. Are there different colors to choose from? I currently have a planar 25 and my mat is a little worn out and needs replaced.

By the by. has anyone noticed Rega have removed all trace of their new P5 & P7 decks off their web site?
I wonder why...

I dunno - could it be that they both look like a bag of arse?
And coming from a partially sighted person who doesn't think Epos ES14s in walnut are actually that gross, that's saying something....

The rega rb700 - which is on the the p5 and p7 - is still on the site. I've heard the tables that were shown at Bristol were prototypes. Good thing because they were ugly.

The new P5 and P7 are back on the Rega web site. Interesting enough, the P5 has a glass platter instead of the variation of the P9 platter that was shown at the Bristol show. The new platter is on the P7. Both tables can us the new TT PSU; comes standard with the P7. I have sent an e-mail to Rega to find out if the new power supply can be used with my Planar 25. Does anyone out there use a different power supply than the stock Rega motor on the planar 25? By the way, am I the only person who thinks "planar" sounds better than "p"?

Gavagai,
Yes I see. The P5 looks better, but the quality of the PC I'm using must be cr~p cos the image is too dark so it's difficult to view in detail.
Like you, Jay, I'm not too taken with the P7's platter either! I was praying they'd replace it!
I'm intrigued by this new power supply and would be interested to know to what extent it improves the sound of the P5, my turntable of choice when I decide to upgrade...

My e-mail to Rega was returned. Here is their answer:
"The new turntables use low voltage 24v motors the same as used in the P9. The new TT PSU will only work with the 24v motors so is not compatible with the P25."
I really can't believe that Rega does not offer upgrade paths for turntable owners. That is, in order to enjoy the benefits of better turntables, you must buy a new turntable. It really seems like they could offer this external power supply in conjunction with a new motor as an upgrade for Planar 25 users. They could also offer platter upgrades. I 'll just keep dreaming about a P9.

Gavagai,
Don't worry, I'm sure your P25 will do you just fine for now! However, if a motor upgrade is what you're after, all may well be not quite lost. I remember someone mentioning Heed Audio on another thread recently. They specialise in turntable power supply upgrades so may provide a suitable alternative. In fact they do a specific upgrade for Rega TT's and can be found at the following link:-

Worth try if you're interested. Good luck!
