The music from Hell
Posted by: graham55 on 01 February 2005
So, while you're all thinking about my previous post for your ONLY desert island disc, ponder this.
You've been sent to Hell and Old Nick is softening you up with repeat playings of your LEAST FAVOURITE music. What would he choose?
In my case, I'd crumble after hearing Tina Turner start her way shouting through her so-called "Greatest Hits".

I think somebody is missing the point here.
Opera singers are as individual and the operas also as different as rock and pop singers and their music. If no two are alike, how can you be so certain there isn't one you can like?
Not impressed?
A lot of them have a good cleavage. Including the men!
Still nah? Suit yourselves.

I have tried many times to like an Opera and have always come to the same negative conclusion. True I have not heard ALL operas so I still have a chance of "getting" one.
My mum and dad were both fans, dad even saw Gigli sing in Venice during WW2, but the opera genes have passed me by, and my offspring to so far.

I like my women big but some of the divas are a bit much even for me!

Maybe I am missing the point, not of life , but of opera, or...?
Can someone (or anyone) tell me, what e.g. Verdis background-music to Othello
adds to the drama of Shakespeare other than irritating noise?

There is no music from hell. It is all in our heads. We are thankfully all very different in our musical tastes otherwise there would be very little choice in the marketplace. The debate should be how do we immediately know when we hear a piece of music if it will march dowm the ages and be as controversial then as it is today.

Queen is also my idea of hell especially Bohemian Tragedy - it goes on and on and on...
Most Britpop from the nineties sucks especially Blurred and Oh, ay sis?
Anything by Motorhead (and ilk) - a choir of Alsatian dogs accompanied by an orchestra of chainsaws.
It is all in the mind but then so is hell.
Then there's the stuff they play at hi-fi shows on heavyweight turntables (with clamps) into valve amps the size of beer fridges. Tinkly-plinque!

Steve,
You are right, hell is in the mind. We have our own personnal hates and loves.
How about Cher singing that warbling song..................hell.
The Ibiza club stuff.........
Agadoo................
As for kid's, my 7 and 9 year olds have an old CD they listen to. I am often treated to a duet of "The Tide is High" by Blondie when travelling in the car!
Thank God they are not into RAP that would do it for me.

Blondie can be in my car any time.
Anyway, for those of you not on the Opera trip but think it might be worth a short listen, if only to re enforce your views that its tosh, just try some of the highlights from:
Mozart, Cosi Fan Tutti and the Marriage of Figaro
Puccini, Madam Butterfly
Verdi, La Traviata
There are other that I could suggest, but these are very middle of the road and if you don’t like these then its back to the Sugarbabes, Led Zep, or whatever else pulls your chain.
Remember, keep listening to what you like, but don’t shut the door through prejudice. If we can try before we buy we should try before we slate as well.
Regards to all.
BTW, Cher, now there is a monotone, boring, irritating, useless……………..Opps, am I now being prejudice?

This one is easy;
Rod Stewart doing "American Standards". What a joke!

Generally agree with most opinions but this is ridiculous. Maria Carey, yes. Phil Collins, yes. Yes, YES!. But please not Stevie.
As for Queen (I hear daggers drawing), I was into them in my teens and still have fond memories of their music. They have a place in my book.
Sean (right now listening to a live version of Carl Wilson singing ‘God Only Knows’ – magic)

Lomo, you are being much too reasoned and rational. Be honest, there must some music that annoys the hell out of you.
Andy von just don't mention norah jones

...and I can't believe no-one has mentioned:-
Chris de Burgh - Lady in Red
Chris de Burgh - Lady in Red

Now now, sometimes these things have other memories.
On my first night with my now Wife she wore a Red Kimono.....
For no other reason that song can be the last one I ever hear at the end of my days.

Yep, my list has to have Lady In Red near the top, with Rod Stewart singing "foggy" jazz, and The Streets
, plus the Pet Shop Boys (thanks for reminding me, Earwicker), all vying for first place

I hate Queen BIG style. I was thinking the other day about how much I hate them (a mate of mine is quite a fan), but then I remembered Fine Young Cannibals and the fucking Petshop Boys. I hate Kylie Minogue, don't get me wrong, but at least she's nubile.
Nah, Queen are the worst, even though I am entirely incapable of understanding why anyone would listen to the Petshop Boys on purpose. It is very strange. (Mind you, a friend of mine is a GP and he was telling me about all the strange things people stick up their bottoms and are unable subsequently to retrieve... people derive pleasure from the strangest things!)
Ah well, there it is. I'll stick to beer Beethoven and TS Eliot. And Juliana Banse!

It's an age thing. Most people think their parents' music is utter crap. Most parents think their kids' music is utter crap. It's called "progress".
It is completely inappropriate to like your parents music. It makes you an old fart too!
I don't have a suitable word for parents who like their kids' music. Not since "trendy" became rather corrupted in the 70's.

and what about Michael Bolton, isn´t he great? I missed his former hairstyle though.

Very easy - Bhohemian Rhapsody (I can't even spell it). The mental picture of those twatish, bum fluffed, cap sleeved T shirt wearing twats giving it air guitar at the school disco, along with the 'ground breaking' pseudo classical arrangement and those 'amazing' video effects of their ugly mugs frankly make me want to puke.

It has nothing to do with maturity, merely taste: bornwina has described this musical atrocity in the only viable way. People who love music are duty-bound to heap opprobrium on such hateful rot.
Queen are/were quite probably the worst band of all time. CERTAINLY the most cringesome and embarrassing.

It's funny, all this queen-bashing.Never could stand 'em myself, but back then, I had mates that were queen fans,& I begrudgingly agreed that they were an ok band that I just bloody hated, separating my "taste" from talent.Maybe people got into them as an antidote to the basic noisy punk music that I was into (still am).Within the limits of pop music, at least some of their stuff had a degree of structure & ability, something which is getting rarer all the time.(oh sh*t, now I AM sounding like my dad!).
Just a thought, matt.

This might qualify as a new topic but the worst band I ever heard were called Black Widow who I saw/heard in Swindon in the early '70s. They were absolute shite. Apparently their records are very collectable now. Isn't life strange.

I can't stand Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, and the other one ? from Australia, ?Archie? someone?. Also any new RnB, that is just painful. Also I can't stand Powderfinger and I live in Brisbane (where they're from).
my friends still pay me out for discovering Phil Collins "no jacket required" in my record collection, I was young and unexposed.

My in-laws just dragged me into the tele-room to be subjected to some talent show bunch called"G4" doing a quasi-operatic karaoke version of bohemian -bloody-crapsody on some tea-time show. All it needed was a guest appearance by whitney/mariah/celine & I would've cut both ears off! AND the in-laws thought it was great!!
