Av unity gain on 252
Posted by: rod ayling on 02 April 2004
Hi,
Ever since I have connected my 252 via unity gain to the AV2, I now experience pops and crackles through the front speakers.
Even when the AV2 is in standby mode, this still occurs, providing unity gain is selected on the 252.
Naim thought it might be the lead that connects the 252 to the AV2, but this has not remedied the situation, after trying out another lead.
Has anyone else out there had the same problem?
Thanks,
Rod

Is the noise happening thru any input on the 252 or just the A/V input?
Do you turn the volume control on the AV2 down or do you leave it at listening level when in standby?
Basically the Unity Gain function as I understand it provides fully open gain from the 252 and assumes the volume control on the AV2 set at relatively low level.

Hi,Geoff,
The 'pops' only appear on the unity gain mode.
In answer to your second question, when the AV2 is in standy mode ( and I have left the 252 on the AV input ) , I sometimes lower the volume before I switch the AV2 into standy and sometimes I don't . Does it matter if I turn the AV2 off , that the volume was left on before or not ? I can't see why this should maje a difference, after all the Av2 is in standby?
Regards,
Rod

Hi Rod.
I have had the same problems with my AV2 on unity gain-lots of quite loud pops and also some strange buzzing sound.
There is a new lead which is supossed to cure this noise,I am getting mine tomorrow.
Cheers

Hi,Trevor,
I got the new lead today, labelled the Na-93 , but it has'nt made a blind bit of difference.I trust this is the same lead you will receive. please let me know if its different.
I was relieved to hear someone else was having the same problem, I thought it was just me.
I'll let you know the outcome of this and if you find the answer , please do the same.
I wonder if Manu or Frank Abela are aware of the problem. Does this fault only ocuur on the 252 or all new unity gain available pre-amps.
Thanks,
Rod

Rod & Trevor,
I hope you figure out the problem soon. It must be frustrating, especially with the new lead!
Sorry I don't have any advice for you but just wanted to inform you that Manu is busy with an audio show in his neck of the woods so probably won't be able to answer your question. Perhaps Frank or someone from Naim might be able to help.

I will report back tomorrow when I have tried the new cable

Hi,Trevor,
Thanks for your help. Not being funny, but haven't Naim been dealing with the unity gain thing for a while now. Surely they should have got it right by now.
My AV2 went into distortion mode as well, because it did'nt like digital satellite signals . It ended up going for repair and then came back with another 2 different faults.
Mind you when it went back again, they did give me a brand new one , to replace a year old one, so its not all bad news !
Cheers,
Rod

I do get pops through the speakers when in standby mode, it coincides with other electrical items in the house switching on or off. I managed to minimise it by running my Naim gear off of the same sockets.
Based on a couple of other things that I've heard, I think the buzzing might be due to an earth loop somewhere along the line - maybe one of the sources?
Steve.

Hi,Neil,
Don't I know you from somewhere !
The 200 sounds terrific as a rear surround amp. It adds great presence to the sound and helps give my M&K tripoles some lovely sound effects. It is a very worthwhile upgrade from the 175. In combo with the amps I'm using, it makes watching movies an exhilarating experience. Can't wait to watch a few more movies and really turn up the wick !
How's the 282/250 combo sounding now ?
Best wishes,
Rod

Manu is still alive, even in the middle of a show (end of day one).
I don't think the problem comes from the unity gain function. Never have such problems with any preamp. My demo unit is working on a 252 with the "old" cable.
I suspect, you have not the latest software version in the AV2. Press and hold OSD key on the remote, what does it says?. Latest version should be P106 or AVP0102 if you have the last PIC.
Later versions (P104 IIRC) had sometime cracking noise apearing when it looses the digital signal, mostly on digital TV sources (sat or cable).
I don't know about the standby noise, i'll check next week.
We've got rave comments about the DVD5 picture at the show (with a Runco projector on a 110' Stewart screen)). Sound is of course fantastic, but could we expect less with AV2, 300, 145, 200, SL2, Axent, intro.

All opinions are my own, and reflect those of the organisation i work for, even if not stipulated.

Hi,Manu,
Thanks very much for your reply, especially at this busy time.
I have checked my AV2 and the software version I have is AVC0102 F421. So this suggests , the AV2 is bang up to date. I'm well aware of the distortion problem on digital signals, as I had the problem myself and in the end Naim completely replaced my AV2 ( after it came back with two other faults!)
I still believe it is the unity gain to the Av2 connection/circuitry causing the problem. My 252 is absolutely fine on all other source inputs and only crackles and pops thru this input, regardless of whether the AV2 is being used or in standy.
Naim's replacement lead sadly has not resolved the problem for me.
Many thanks and enjoy the show,
Rod

Maybe useless info.
1) I had a 112 at one time & used the unity gain with the front pre-outs on a Denon 3802 A/V receiver with no problems
2) I now have a 282 and use the unity gain in the same way but now with a SONY VA555ES A/V receiver, again with no problems
3) I have had an occasional "pop or crackle" but only from the Cable box digital out and only when in use.
This suggests that unless the 252 has a different implementation of unity gain from the 282 it looks like the problem is in the AV2 signal chain rather than the 252.

Hi Rod,
I got the new lead(same as yours)today along with a new AV2,mine had a few faults, and no change -there are still some loud pops when the sky box is used.
I might try not using the unity gain but it means that i have to set the volume on the 252 to about 11 o'clock, which is fine until I forget to turn it down and play a cd(happend once I did'nt like it and the speakers realy did'nt like it).
Cheers.

Hi,Trevor,
Thanks for the update and also for your comments Geoff.
Naim equipment just don't seem to like digiboxes do they ! I'm already on my second AV2, due to the first having this distortion problem with digital signals.
For a matter of interest, do your pops and crackles occur, even when the AV2 is in standby ? I run phonos from the back of the digibox straight into the Av2.
It's a bit annoying having the unity gain feature and then not being able to use it, for fear of malfunction. I too worry about waking up the whole street at some ghastly hour.
I wonder if its a faulty batch of 252's. Mine dates back to Nov 2002 189xxx serial number, does yours as well ? It sounds like mine is an early model and perhaps one of the first 252's ?
I must say Naim's 'don't worry they never go wrong' crown is slipping a bit of late. I've had problems with a Headline,CDS2, AV2 and now 252, all in the last year.
Does anyone know if Linn products are any good !!
Ok moan over, Naim- you can't live with them , you can't live without them !
Regards,
Rod
