March Madness

Posted by: matthewr on 16 March 2004

Due to an improved cable package this year I'll be able to watch the NCAA Tournament for the first time. Naturally I am convinced I have all 63 picks nailed.

I have decided to support St Joe's (cos they are great to watch) and Standford (the intellecutals choice).

Should you want to test your skills against my beginners luck go to http://games.si.cnn.com/signup/signup.asp?game_id=15 and sign up for the "Padded Cell" private bracket. The password is 'mickparry'. It's free but you have to register so just make sure you use a hotmail style e-mail or else untick all the boxes to avoid getting Sports Illustrated golf related spam.

1-3 now. The Salukis just broke my heart.

I'm 3 of 4 missing out only on the Alabama squeker which was obviosuly a toss-up.

I’m 5-3 and haven’t had time to catch any of the games. My Final Four picks are: Kansas, Oklahoma St., Stanford and Mississippi St. The final is Stanford vs. Oklahoma St. with the Cardinals beating the Cowboys!

I start the day 10-6 and in last place, and analysts are predicting my overall winner to lose to Louisiana-Lafayette in today's first matchup. Frown

Matthew,

I like your picks. It might be tough to beat you. How did you and Joe get the extra point?

I’m the only one carrying a losing team to the elite eight. Michigan St. let me down; Izzo is a good coach and usually gets a lot out of his team. I heard the Fighting Illini did well today! My state school might surprise some people. The DePaul-Dayton game was excellent last night; multiple lead changes and two overtimes. If either of the teams had hit their free throws during the early part of the game it would have been a blow out.

We'll see how tonight goes, but as of this second my entire Sweet 16 is alive.

There have been some excellent, excellent games. I was really pulling for Air Force last night (man, they were quick!) and E Tennessee St this afternoon. I haven't missed one minute of CBS' coverage. Big Grin

"How did you and Joe get the extra point?"

You get 2 points for an underdog pick -- so my Mahattan pick gets me 2pts.

"I haven't missed one minute of CBS' coverage"

There is somethign seriously annoying about Gregg Gumbel though. I hate him the football commentary as, AFAICT, he knows jack about football and hjas somehow managed to drag Phil Simms down to his level.

The Wake Forest game (last evening for me) was a cracker but I've missed out on today's games due to work and then a social commitment and a combination of drunkeness/tierdness means I will miss tonights games (I am struggling to get into Richmond Wisconsin).

In case anyone missed it, or would just like to look again, here's the current scores:

Rank Team...............Points...Overall Rank
1. Highbury Irons.........28.....9777
2. Team Petrik............25.....46878
3. Team Edwards.........25.....46878
4. Litwins Ramblers.......24.....61909
5. Seattle Reigning 3's...21.....90218

Note the inverse relationship between basketball knowledge and score Wink (Apart from Bob that is)

It's not just Gumbel- everyone at CBS minus Len Elmore, Bill Raftery, and Clark Kellog (he's in the studio) know dick about hoops.

Anyone see my boyz in that NBA-like 102-100 loss to UAB last night? That one crushed my spirits.

Are you watching now Ludders? Gonzaga look to be in some trouble.

Wake Forest are looking very impressive -- I do like Chris Paul and think I am fundamentally a back court sort of guy. I hate all that posting up stuff (which is why I think I never seem to enjoy NBA games).

Gonzaga, those little beef and potatoes eatin' wife-beater wearin' meth lab hickabilly cowtown bitches. Mad

I tend to like any player regardless of position who can knock down a 3 or take it inside. Swingmen (6'5"-6'7" and thin, like Hodge of NC State, Azubuike of Kentucky) do this, as do very unique power forwards (Gomes of Providence, Melvin of NC State). I usually don't get excited about players at the extreme positions- centers or point guards.

I really think UAB is gonna bring the ruckus against Kentucky. Should be interesting. Texas-North Carolina and Georgia Tech-Boston College should be great matchups.

The Wake Forest game appears to be my lot for tonight and my cable channel says "NCCA coverage continues tomorrow morning at 9:30am".

Which is annoying to say the least.

I'm screwed.

I think it's all going a bit pear shaped for everyone. Although Bob is moving up nicely on the rails.

First my alma mater, then my second favorite team- UAB stabbed me with a butter knife and then twisted it.

I don't think they'll have any problem with Kansas.

We all have a chance to win. The key games are Pitt vs. Ok St. and Duke vs. Illinois. I will have to root for the Fighting Illini through the rest of the tournament. Does the winner get a prize? Will Richard Dane put up a CDS3/XPS2? That would make it more interesting!

The winner gets lifetime free meals and preferred seating at Chez Ludwig, and also gets to buy me a Santa Cruz Blur mtb (XL, Trans Blue, R-DB kit, please). Big Grin

Then if Illinois continue to win you better find out how John likes his eggs done.

I also find myself rooting for The Crimson Tide

I'm pulling for Alabama, Alabama-Birmingham, and Texas the rest of the way.

Ludwig,

When does the Baseball 2004 thread start? We could start a ‘The Padded Cell’ fantasy baseball league.

It looks like either Joe or Bob will win the tournament pool. If Duke keeps winning I will end up in a tie for third with Matthew. At least it isn’t last place. I missed the Duke – Illinois game; sleep was more important. Go (I’m not sure yet)!

The St Joe's, Oklahoma St. game last night was fantastic -- I like both teams a great deal and it was a real shame one had to go out at this stage.

OSU are my boys now. I am beginning to dislike Duke and (to a lesser extent) UConn just because they seem to have Evil Empire connotations. I keep having to check the bracket ro remind myself who the other 2 are (Kansas and Georgia Tech).

That OSU-St. Joe's game was a dandy. I really wanted Nelson to hit that last shot. I think I'll pull for Georgia Tech, since I like coach Paul Hewitt (this means they'll lose). He coached Siena several years ago when I lived in that area. IIRC he first made a name for himself by upsetting Georgia Tech!

It is Joe Petrik (Duke) vs. Bob Edwards (Connecticut) for the championship and free breakfast for life at Ludwig’s place.
