Baseball '04

So, should we do a fantasy league on Yahoo? My fear is that I heard MLB leagues can be time consuming.

Regardless, let's start by ragging on the offseason moves.

My early picks are the Angels and Cubs.

Great run from redbirds. Historically strong at Busch they can turn it around. Best 3,4,5 in baseball. If Jocketty can trade for a serious starter after allstar break we have a chance.

John

Florida surprise of season for me.

After the inexplicable debacle against Pittsburgh the best team in baseball are back on it. Fixtures either side of the all star game settles NL central. If the Cards can deal for a starting pitcher we look awesome.

I notice the rest of you baseball fans have gone quiet. 20 games over 500 and the best record in the major leagues. Go Redbirds!

What has happend to the Cubs?

And what was that 1st inning ejection for Pudge all about?

My ideal World Series: Cards v. Yankees.

Grew up a Yankee fan, and still am...but I'm still not convinced their starting pitching is good enough. Rest of the team is fine.

Cards--my fave NL team. Why? Because my grandfather was good friends with Red Schoendienst, and I got to meet him and visit the Cards dugout right before a game at Shea. Barely remember it, 'cause I was very young. Great tradition!

Matthew--the Cubs will come around. The real question is what happened to Houston?

Best,

Bob

It's traditional at this time of year for John C. to point out how the Cards are a) the best team in Baseball and b) World Series bound.

It always seems to go wrong in Sept/Oct though.

Similarly, I'm a Dodger fan because my grandfather befriended Tommy Lasorda in the 70's, who then gave a team-signed ball to him for me in spring training. Since then I've bled Dodger blue.

Well, it's early July which means it's time to start following baseball. Looking at the standings, the NL West and NL East are pretty exciting right now.

What happened? What since 1908?

Watched Cubs Vs Cards last night -- with Kerry Wood back and Slammin' Sammy smashing it around the place again the Cubs looked good again.

Wouldn't be surprised to see these two in the NLCS.

I think that's right. Their pitching is so good that they will probably have a big second half of the season. This goes against all the eveidence of the past 100 (except last) years.
Houston is harder to work out as they've already made big trade moves.

John

Idly wondering if Randy Johnson might be trade material

I read last week that (surprise, surprise) the Yankees had their sites set on Johnson.

So the rumour is now Nomar to the Cubs for a number of prospects, then prospects get used to bring the Big Unit to Boston.

Discuss.

Still laughing at Roger Clemens

Matthew--

Won't matter--the Curse of the Bambino lives!

Best,

Bob

The Cubs would need to let go of a starter to get Nomar. The Sox are surely still in the wild card chase? Zambrano?

I see Houston have imploded. In soccer changing a manager midstream usually helps but is the same true in baseball?

My Dodgers have been playing great ball. 13-2 this month!!!

Surely I must be hallucinating?
Posted on: 18 July 2004 by Bob Edwards
Hallucinating? Why? They've always (OK, almost) had good pitching, and this year they actually have some hitting!

And though it pains me to say it, the best closer (regular season, anyway) in the game.

Best,

Bob

Looks like the Cubbies are getting a bit emotional at the prospect of falling 10 games behind. They may not even make the wildcard. Youda thunk they were used to it by now.

Awesome catch by Jim Edmonds at the weekend as well.

Nomar to the Cubs. Oooooh. Whatever. Too little too late.

Of course my Dodgers made the only move that would turn their outstanding clubhouse chemistry upside-down. I'm not a happy camper.

It looks like my guy (Beltre) or John C's (Pujols) is most likely for NL MVP, coming right down to the wire!

PS- I'm uncomfortable with a team 12.5 games out possibly being the wildcard (Cubs). Let's go back to 2 divisions. And can the AL DH!
Posted on: 12 August 2004 by John C
Larry Walker!!! What a great move. The big problem with the Cubs as wild card is that in a short series with their pitching they can beat anyone. Scott Rolen is my MVP.

John
Posted on: 12 August 2004 by matthewr
The Cards actually have 3 legit MVP candidates if you add Edmonds to Pujols and Rolen.

Matthew
Posted on: 12 August 2004 by ErikL
Duh, I meant Rolen! Roll Eyes

Re: pitching, the Braves, Cubs, Cards, and Dodgers are ranked #1, 2, 3, 4 in all of baseball in team ERA (Padres #5; and in fact not an AL team until #8), which could make the NL playoffs classic old-school baseball. I'm getting excited about all of this.
Posted on: 16 August 2004 by John C
Haven't seen much of Beltre, nice numbers in a limited lineup. What's the potential match up or don't we know until the wild card? In real baseball it's Cards/Yankees world series.

John

October '64 I must lend it to Matthew

Yeah, you hit it right on the money- Beltre's carried the Dodgers.

It looks like the Cubs, Padres, and Giants are battling it out for the wildcard. And the Bosox and Rangers in the AL. Personally I'd like to see the Padres and Rangers get it. Those other teams have had their chances, to say the least.
