How long does a CDX2 take to burn in?

Posted by: Sir Crispin Cupcake on 15 March 2004

Hi everyone,

Went a bit mad at the weekend and demmed CD5i, CD5 and CDX2 and ended up with CDX2, which simply annihilated previous 2 machines. Sounds fantastic but what sort of improvements can I expect as it burns in fully and how long does it take? (CDX2 72/hi/180 Dyn52s). Thanks in anticipation to any one who has done this upgrade.

8 - 10 weeks but still some improvement after that. In my experience you would do well to keep it well away from the Hi-Cap though

No didn't try hicap on CD5, apparently makes a big improvement though and probably goes a long way towards closing the gap. I've no money either now and nearly asked my dealer to ban me for at least a year!

Boy Graham that's quick.
Of course I may be kidding myself but I felt my CDX2 was still improving 6 weeks in.

I have had it for over a year and on an evening when everything is "right" .....

(You know, correct amount of alcohol, correct quality power cause everybody else has gone to bed, and the CD for the mood)

.... I still think wow that sounds better than it ever did before.

like the advert says :- CDX2's grow on you

....I agree with Geoff here, I distinctly remember approx 3-4 months in...the odd night when everything is just right and the system clicks over onto the next incremental notch, and you think 'Wow,I just never heard it sound this good before'....

Skipping the CD5 was a good choice if you have the funds I went through the CD5, CD5-Flatcap2, CD5 Hi-Cap route to my CDX2 and there is no contest!.

When I have the funds I would like to demo the XPS-2 what results can I expect?.

Will it be simular to adding a Hi-Cap to the CD5?.

significant improvement comes in around 7-10days, noticeable bass punch comes first, then gradually more open on the high end.

Thanks for your input everyone. It'll be a while before I even think of an XPS2. Not sure whether this a better next step than replacing 72 with 82 or 180 with 250. I suspect 72 - 82 is probably best next move but as I say this is at least a year away.

Richard,

Just sit back and enjoy the music, don't even think about up-grades yet.

Your CDX2 will take a few months to completely settle in and just gets better and better.

Arun,

I thought the Cd5i was a bit anaemic sounding and didn't find it a particularly engaging listen. The CD5 was much better, more presence, better dynamically, much more involving and more fleshed out - hard to describe really but clearly a better machine. This would have been a really worthwhile upgrade from my previous Marantz CD63KI. The 5i was better too as you'd expect but the difference wasn't that big. CD5 definitely a better buy particularly as Flat/Hi-cap can be added although i didn't listen to this combo. CDX2 in another league altogether though.

Hope this helps, what are you using at the moment?
