Maybe I'm selling my Naim!!!!

Posted by: FE on 18 April 2004

I LOVE the sound of my Naim system, but I HATE the space that it takes up in my living room. Why can't Naim produce a quality high end integrated amp, instead of pre, power AND power supplie? So that I only have to buy 2 components, CD-player and amp. So a challange to Naim, make an integrated high-end amp with a sound quality as the NAP 300.

Um, FE. What about the Nait 5?

Hi Fe,
good idea. But why two components. A gread thing would be an integrated CD-Amp. Such an item - i´m sure - would have a large WAF.

We all have the same problem, however, there are ways around it.

For me, I moved the whole kit into the dining room and ran the two speaker cables back under the wall in to the lounge.

I also ran cables the other way from the suround sound amp.

So, I have the main hardware in the dining roon and only the Satbox, DVD and SS Processor under the TV. Keeps things simple and the wife is happy that the front room does not look like a HiFi store.

I have read on several occasions of the theoretical benefit of having the pre and power amps close together in the one box. Also the reasons for taking the PSU away from the signal circuitry to another box are somewhat self-evident. If both of these are true then one might think that an integrated amp, built to say 252/300 standards, with a separate PSU might be quite a contender.

Steve

Surely it stops being an integrated then?

Technically you are probably right although as it related to the basis of this thread you would end up with a 2 box solution as opposed to the 4 box one required for a 252/300 combo.

I think I would still personally consider an amp that combined pre and power in one box to be an integrated amp irrespective of whether or not it had an external PSU. Of course such a unit might not be so attractive to Naim as it could see the number of Fraims required reduce .

A Nait 5 with a supercap should work well ....

I am not really convinced with an integrated CD-Amp, but IMHO, a more persuasive integrated amp than Nait 1,2,3,5,5i would be interesting..

I think Naim should create a one-box design that plays CD, MP3, DVD-A, SACD and DVD video, includes both analog and DAB tuners, and produces 500W of power into each of 8 channels. I would be willing to live with a one-disc player, but a 5-disc multi-changer would be nice. It should decode Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, and 8.1, plus adhere to all of the THX standards. This box should be no taller than 3".

Then they need to produce some cute little satellite speakers no bigger than 3"-cubed, that perfectly reproduce mids and highs, and will work in conjunction with a compact, hide-it-under-the-coffee-table subwoofer, to create a flat frequency response. All of these speakers should be wireless, so that I don't need any of that ugly cable strewn about my living room.

Then they would finally be able to compete with Bose, my all-time favourite manufacturer. That would be totally awesome!!!

Surely you realize Bose is the knockoff Bang and Olufsen!

I, for one, would buy a Naim Teasmaide ®©™

Imagine waking up to that characteristic warm and detailed sound - with a hot cuppa thrown in...

Then you could upgrade by adding a Hi-Caf and get your day started with a real swing.
