More NBLs arrived

Posted by: Camlan on 17 April 2004

NBLs arrived last night on demo to replace active SBLs. Original intention was to go active with NBLs with the addition of another olive 250 and a 3/6 crossover. Unfortunately Naim were not able to supply the 3/6 in time and this should be here I understand in c10days time (hurry up lads). NBLs are ex demo so should be to some extent run in. Some initial comments particularly with reference to previous posts.

1. Can you run NBLs on passive olive 250 - absolutely they sound superb.

2. Are passive NBLs better than active SBLs - again no contest. Sorry Tom (Alves) I have run active SBLs for nearly 15 years and NBLs even passive just outclass them. There is a delicacy there that I have never previously heard from Naim equipment. God alone knows waht they will sound like active.

3. Are they big - definitely but they look fantastic.

Thanks to Blythe, Minky, Tom Alves, NB and others on this forum who have made my consideration of this upgrade so much easier. I suppose Supercap for the crossover will be next on the agenda.

ps NB If you chose Neats over NBLs they must be some speakers!!!

I heard my dealers NBLs using a single olive 250-I thought them to be rather overly polite and lacking swing. This apparently was greatly improved by running 2x250, using one amp per channel (the so-called NAP125 configuration which comes very close to the true NAP135 monoblock). If you have an extra 250-which it sounds like you do- then this would be the way to go until you get the Snaxo.
Those NBLs are now sounding superb with a 250 and 4x135s active. A single 250 only scratches the surface.

Camlan, be aware that if the NBL's are on demo for a few days, the SBL's will sound broken when the NBL's go back and you revert to the SBL's Eek
Don't turn them up loud with one 250 for long, particularly on vinyl - the 250 won't like it!!
I'm still delighted with my NBL's on 3X250's (Olive) and yes, you will "have to" get the supercap for the SNAXO Big Grin

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Blythe - Thanks for that. I read your earlier post and have been keeeping an eye on the heat build up on the 250. Up till now it seems OK. Re the SBLs, I don't think the NBLs will be going back!

Ron - Snaxo and extra 250 should arrive next week. If there is a delay, I will do as you suggest with present unused 250.

Consider some Mana soundbases for your NBLs. The impact is similar to putting your system on a dedicated line.
