Dynaudio 42s with Nait5?
Posted by: Paul Hutchings on 29 March 2004
I recently purchased a Nait5 pretty much "on a whim".. should be here in a couple of days.
When I saw the Nait I was scouring all the s/h sites for a pair of Dynaudio Audience 42s as I'd heard a set on the end of a Cyrus 8/Arcam CD summat and was very impressed at the sound they made for something so small, I missed out on a pair that were going for £250 and was kind of kicking myself.
I've now found another pair, immaculate, couple of years old for the same sort of money.. thing is of course I need to decide whether I want them and I don't yet have the Nait to know how it will do with my current speakers which are JMLab Chorus 706's.
I'm not much good with the "flowery word" thing, but I always think the JMLabs are excellent with accoustics/vocals but sound quite "thin" with anything like rock/metal where I'd expect quite a bit of bass (being a 3m x 4m bedroom setup I think floorstanders are out the equation).
Any thoughts on the Dynaudios with the Nait? I keep reading about how 4ohm impedance can take some driving, but then all the local dealers seem to praise the naim/dynaudio combination.
TIA,
Paul

As you know i also have for a couple of weeks an NAIT5. I play with a pair of self built Dynaudio's. It is very very very well. and very very very good. The lowest impedence is for about 6 Ohms. And the sencetifity (is that correct written ? ) is for about 88 dB
So don't worrie it is a great sound when use a combination of NAIT5/ Dynaudio
Here some pics of my Dynaudio:
Speakerspeaker2Bus try first at home before you will buy it. And you have to let your NAIT5 first playeng for a week before he sound great. It has to warming up. That's my experience
It is sounding greater and greater.
Succes

....I ran Dynaudio 52's (similar characteristics to the 42's) with a CD5/112/150 for a time and with a Rega Planet/NAD combination before that.....the D52's were/are an excellent match for Naim low end electronics and stunning all rounders at the price (albeit not as transparent as JMLab).....it was only the arrival of the CDX2 that humbled the D52's (now replaced with JMLab 936's)....whereas the 706's might sound thin in a certain system context - it might be worth holding on before committing to the 42's....you may find that the Chorus 706's superior transparency takes on additional weight with the Nait 5....

Dynaudio is a good match with Naim, I have used both 42s and Contour 1.1s with great results.

I'm running a pair of Dynaudio Audience 40's on a Nait 5, CD5 and they're amazing. They're not the easiest load but my Nait drives them very well.
For ages I couldn't work out why they sounded, well a bit nothing really. I pulled them away from the wall boundries and out of an alcove (I know, I know) and OMG! absolutely beautiful. Smooth sweet treble and lots of taught bass. Lots of detail and not fatiguing at all.
Buy with confidence.

Yep - heard the 40s off of a NAIT3 and that was good; dem'd the CD5 with NAIT5 and 42s and the whole rig sounded excellent.
The 42s are very special little speakers and if I didn't have the Rega Elas, I'd go for the 42s in a shot. Get the proper Dynaudio stands though - they really are worth it (even at £200!).

Any advances on "just f***ing do it".. seems to be heading that way.. still this nagging doubt that the JMLabs will sing with the nait or I'll wait until the nait arrives and by then the chap will have sold the 42s..

I did have Dyn 40's on my old arcam/rega setup, then went to Dyn 62s when I upgraded to Nait 5/CD5. Both are great speakers - the 40's replaced some B&W602s and left them for dead in terms of detail, rhythm etc. Haven't heard an JMlabs so can't comment but - and it's the problem with this forum - can't help wishing I tried some Neat's first!
Audio T have some good offers on s/h and ex dem Dyns: may be worth a look at the site?

Well the Nait arrived Wednesday and I'm currently running it with my JMLab Chorus 706s, Quad CD66, NACA5 and I have to say it sounds fantastic so I think I'm going to keep things as they are for the forseeable future..
no point spending money that doesn't need to be spent!
regards,
Paul
