Kan 2 with nait 5 i bad sound?

Posted by: o.j. on 13 March 2004

I borrowed burnt 5i from the dealer and noticed
that there is explosive rythm and bass control but instruments and voice do not sound so natural and rich as with my nait3.(with kan2)
there were three reasons for me to go for nait 5 i.
1.remote control (maybe i find anait 3r)
2.bass control at high levels (maybe i can get a flatcap.
3.unity gain to pass through with my AV receiver.
Now my questions are:wheree to buy a mechanical switch between to amps and one pair
of speakers? and am i right to go for a flatcap
for better bass control?

5i cannot be used with a Flatcap. Adding a Flatcap to the Nait 3R will bring substantial improvements to everything, not just bass control. A Hicap is even better, and though I've not heard it, I'd bet a 3R/Hicap would be better than a 5i.

Naim kit is best left on and sounds better after being left on for at least 5 days or more.

Just give the 5I time

For the price of a new 5i, you could go secondhand and buy something like an older 72/140, which is so much better.

Hy Bob!
2 questions:
Difference between flat and high cap?
necessary to go for the olive green caps,
or do newer ones also technical fit to nait 3?
i have an external no naim phono stage with 24
volts, and a cambridge cd so i do not need voltage for other components.

However, I recently borrow a run-in 5i from my dealer, as I intended to buy one for my bedroom system, and I have never been so disappointed with an amp quite simply. It's a mile 1/2 away from my chrome bumper 62/140 through SBL's (maybe too revealing), and was such a pain to listen too with a full bandwidth source (unlike the roll-off CDX-2), it's not even worth the comment.

One good point, never-the-less, was its bass. Tight, controlled - making it easy to pick-out the bass lines, as for music connection - nothing, frequencies above 5k - terrible.

As for the run-in/warm-up time, you are probably adapting more to the sound than the sound is to you.
Hy PR!
Glad to hear that it seems i do not need a doctor to check my ears,my 5i experiences are
exactly the same (now its running 30 hours and
sound is more refined but it has not changed
dramatically to the better.)
concerning what you said about adapting to sound i switched back to nait3 and it sounds
a lot more right from the first moment(and first impression is always an important thing for me if i have to choose between whatever) .Synergy effect with other
naim components is no theme for me,being a vinyl junkie and never would like any cd player
with a puck.(having a micromega solo Trauma)

The Flatcap has a much smaller transformer than the Hicap, and, I believe, significantly smaller capacitors. I don't know if the regulators are the same. Flatcap is also in the slimline case, the Hicap in the half-width case. The Hicap is dramatically better when powering a preamp.

Either version of Hicap would work with your Nait 3R.

This is why I bought a Nait 5 and use it with a Flatcap2 (which is also powering CD5)...I'm thinking of getting another FC2 (or s/h hicap) for the CD5 and leaving the FC2 to just power the Nait.

I'm really not sure the 5i kit is worth it as it's just too limited re: upgrades etc.

I agree the hicap is a good choice, for use with the Nait 3

Perhaps the 5i price cut reflects a sound quality cut as well?

History is:
nait1 nait2 nait3 and now ?5 or 5i?the only company where the more expensive integrated has
less Power and if you do not want to listen to
phono (or do not want naim phono)or do not want
to upgrade you will go for 5i.And i did not hear a big sound difference
between those components(without caps) and however(in both cases upgrading means sooner or later you will trade in your 5) .For me this looks
more like a productplacement and marketing disaster.and pricewise there will not be a lot
of money left to improve sound of 5 beyond5i
because of you have to pay also for more inputs and
the flatcapcircuits.
