Second hand CDS-3

Posted by: TomK on 23 April 2004

The Audio Salon in Glasgow is selling a 6 month old CDS-3 for £4650. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to take them up on it but perhaps one of you fine chaps may be interested.

I've dealt with them many times over the years and can confirm they're one of the country's top hi-fi dealers.

They do seem to have some good stuff on offer.

Unfortunately I've just blown my upgrade budget on a Watch otherwise that 252 would be mine.

well, they just saved me some money - not surprisingly, it's already sold.

....why would you buy a second hand CDS-3 for £4,650, when you can buy a brand new one for £4,750? or am I missing something?

Burning-in is expensive.

New price is shown as £7,244 so assume that the power supply is included in the bargain. Hmmm, think I'll have to stick with my 3.5/FC for a while longer even at that price.

Steve.

It's a grand old team to play for...

....there must be something wrong with it(them) then because there is nothing to upgrade to beyond a CDS3/XPS2...were the black boxes empty of any electronics?

It looks as though somebody has traded in a complete system. Wish I hadn't seen the Supercap. I'm now going to have a troubled weekend talking myself out of buying something else I can't afford.

What mystifies me is why someone would trade in a CDS3 at all.

I mean, what's better sounding? A Linn CD12?

Ironically though the Audio Salon is not a Naim dealer, to put it mildly. They are quite hostile to the whole Naim philosophy and have been since I first dealt with them (as The Music Room) in the early 80s. They're good folk in spite of that though and stock some extremely esoteric stuff you don't come across very often.

Hawk,
Thanks for letting me know. I was scared to call them in case it wasn't sold!

PR,
The Music Room was the principal high end place in Glasgow for many years. However they expanded and diversified into AV (I bought my B&O TV from them many years ago). Sadly B&O apparently did the dirty on them and they went under. They re-emerged a few years ago as the Audio Salon. While they never went for the Linn/Naim way they have traditionally stocked an incredible range of ultra-high end stuff. I've not been to their new place but the previous one was like Aladdin's cave. It was a grand west end town house full of 5 figure kit.

You could have filmed bits of the Forsyte Saga in it. Enormous rooms, beautiful wood panelling, leafy views, but sadly no parking! I used to gate crash student parties in that area and had no idea such opulence was so close by.

Whats the betting it will have been bought by a second hand dealer, and very soon be available for about 95% of list?

Mike
