Late night sit in the dark music thread.

Posted by: RICHYH on 25 March 2004

After a great experience the other night I need some other suggestions for the best music to sit alone, with beer/wine in hand, in the dark and get sent.
I start this with one of my favourite LPs-
David Sylvian - Secrets of the beehive. unbelievable!!!!!

Anything by Bjork, most notably Vespertine'
Blue Nile, The Beloved, and most PG especially Ovu. Best is Underworld as loud as you can take, even then it sends me to sleep. Early Yes, a good vinyl pressing of Crime of the Centuary [just to show my age] and a beautiful transcription of Ravel's "Pavane for a Dying Princess" by Julian Bream and John Williams.
Throw in a little Kate Rusby, Scott4, Kamakeriad,DJ Food, This Monkey's Gone to Heaven..............

Serets of the beehive- excellent, have you heard his new one, Blemish- very intimate sounding his best vocal performance.

The The - Mind Bomb. As it says on the sleeve "To obtain maximum pleasure & effect from this album please play VERY LOUD!, VERY LATE, VERY ALONE ... & with the lights turned VERY LOW!!!"

How VERY TRUE!!!!!

Try some of Robert Fripp's Soundscapes series. Gates of Paradise would actually be pretty scary at times in complete dark!
I wouldn't bother with the drink for any of them, they should be purely aural experiences if you're going for at least some sensory deprivation...

For something more conventional, gotta be Dark Side of the Moon.

Can I add Peter Gabriel's "Up" to the list. It's quite a trip if you get past the first track!

I would agree with Rich that David Sylvian is perfect for this - myself, it would be brilliant trees - although sometimes I watch the video Steel Cathedrals just to chill out in the dark.
Brian Eno is also perfect, Apollo being my current fave, and Music for Airports.
Then of course - there is Jazz...

No-one has yet mentioned the scary one off the White Album then... Smile

The Cure - Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Disintegration or Bloodflowers (Pornography is just too scary)
Cocteau Twins - especially Head over Heels
Startled Insects - you won't have heard this, even Nick Lees hadn't heard of them!
Peter Hammill - almost anything for a more reflective mood
Porcupine Tree - especially the more proggy stuff
