Late night sit in the dark music thread.

Posted by: RICHYH on 25 March 2004

After a great experience the other night I need some other suggestions for the best music to sit alone, with beer/wine in hand, in the dark and get sent.
I start this with one of my favourite LPs-
David Sylvian - Secrets of the beehive. unbelievable!!!!!

Andy its Rhythm and Stealth - I have the rather nice 5 x 10" version.

Another late at night one for me is Nusratt Fateh Ali Khan's - Mustt Mustt.

Another suggestion:

Icehouse - Love in Motion

Boards of Canada : Music has the right to children ( Geogaddi is good, but not as IMHO)

Biosphere: Microgravity.

FSOL: Lifeforms

I'm thinking eyes closed, semi conscious state here.

Massive Attack - Blue Lines, Mezzanine
Air - Virgin Suicides OST
Miles Davis - Birth of the Cool

Steve.

It's a grand old team to play for...

Second the choice of FSOL: Lifeforms
I remember many years ago listening to Ricohet in the dark

I'll add:
The orb: ORBUS TERRARUM or U.F.Orb
Fripp & Eno: No pussyfooting
Goldie: Timeless

Me too with Lifeforms, but I always brace myself for that loud synth noise.

If you survive the whole night without falling asleep on these 'easy listening' recommendations there's always Incubus' "Morning View".

'Heart attack in a lay-by' - Porcupine Tree from 'In Absentia'(2002).

Beautifully atmospheric and wonderfully troubling.

The whole album is superb, featuring some rather more cheery, rocky stuff with excellent guitar playing.

Roger Waters - Amused to Death

Very atmospheric all alone in the dark Smile

Music should be 'original' and played 'live'. No more overpaid Karaoke singers.

I find I like listening to "chilled out" drum and bass... Lots of my mates dont believe there is such a thing... Since playing them a couple of the following CD's, I have converted them to chilled DnB lovers...
Mixmag Live! Vol. 3 - Mixed by LTJ Bukem (the album that got me into DnB)
The secret art of science - Mixed by DJ DB
Conversions - Mixed by Kruder and Dorfmeister (probably the slowest of the selection)
Logical Progression Volume 2 - Mixed by Blame
These albums, are still quite fast "beated" (if thats a word), but I find them strangely relaxing...

Other albums I like late at night include:
Pink Floyd - DSOTM (who doesnt like this late at night)
Cafe Del Mar - Chillhouse Volume 2
Ozric Tentacles - Jurrasic Shift (faster end of their stuff)
Ozric Tentacles - Erpland (slower end of their stuff)
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Hybrid - Wide Angle (mainly for the track called "Unfinished Symphony")

On an Ozrics theme...

For late night I would go for 'Sliding gliding worlds' or 'Erpsongs.'

sorry to bring up my own thread but I feel I must tell you again.
Last night in the dark it was Rufus Wainwrights 1st album. It takes a lot of getting into but once it does it blows your mind, I had it 6 years ago and it just grows and grows, its fantastic and something very different, with influences as varied as Billy Joel- the stranger to Talk talk to radiohead.
You can also detect the Van Dyke parks influence as it sounds like Brian Wilson had he been from new york and not had a break down.
BUY IT NOW. WOW! and turn the light off.

I wholeheartedly agree with Rasher, Eno’s Apollo is also one of my faves.
Also agree with Roger Water’s Amused to death, however the bomb attack in the middle changes your mellow headspace quite a bit. Gabriel’s Passion is also brilliant

Also, Duritti Column Return of… works really well alone late at night on a great system.
Pat Metheny’s Beyond the Missouri Sky is also fantastic

Velvet Underground, for sure...playing it in the sunshine is as perverse as playing Magical Mystery Tour on a winters' night. The Dark Side of the Moon images demonstrably better at night!

Sam Phillips - "Fan Dance" or Over the Rhine - "Films for Radio". Both highly recommended.

The ultimate late night album - Mark Hollis - self titled.

Ex-of the fantastic Talk Talk. Take their trend in later albums towards minimalist atmospherics, and add 10 years and you get the picture (or not?).

IMHO one of the greatest albums of the '90's, and of course it sank without trace.

Take a chance and buy it. You know you should.

I'm just feeling that way. I don't know why.
