LP12, Trampolin: Yes or No, need advice please

Posted by: Gram Parsons on 20 March 2004

Hallo,
need advice, is the trampolin better than the solid base or is it depending where the lp12 is placed?

The trampolinn was designed for situations where the LP12 is placed in unsuitable locations such as on a heavy sideboard or similar furniture. If you are using a light rigid turntable support you are usually better without it.

Hallo kan man!

Which light rigid turntable support to you advise for the LP12?

Mana ref table is the best for the lp12,remove the solid base as well and don't go near the trampolin

Any alternatives to Mana? I am from Austria and I can not find a dealer for Mana products...

Audiotech?

Try your local Hi-Fi Dealer as well.

Gram:

You will be very lucky to find either at any dealer. However, the Mana table can be ordered directly from Mana. If the Audiotech LP12 support is still being manufactured, Graham's in London may be able to help. It is probably half the cost of the Mana table. However, I have not compared the two supports myself.

Another even less expensive support would be a used Sound Org table (the original one-shelf variety).

IMO do not use a trampolinn with any of the above.

Gram,

Each to their own but every time I have tried the trampolin/standard baseboard/no baseboard I have always preferred the Trampolin. To my ears it provides better flow and is more fun to listen to. My linn sits on an Audiotech wall shelf which may or may not be as good as the Mana. Probably not.

Hi Gram

The general consensus with the LP12 is for no base board at all. That's how I use mine.

But as others have said; it needs a lightweight rigid table, ideally.

Did you see the recent excellent documentary about your namesake?

I know he took his step-father's surname of Parsons after his real father shot himself when Gram was 11, but why was he christened Cecil Ingram Connor?

The family name was Snively, was it not?

Any idea?

I have used Target, Mana (phase 4,6 and 7) and Fraim floor stands under my LP12. My preference is for Mana. Usually, a wall shelf is a better option than floor stands unless you have a concrete floor. If you are going to use floor stands it is far better to have one dedicated to the turntable rather than placing it on the top of a rack full of equipment.

I don't think you will go wrong with a Mana wall shelf and I think this would be your best solution. Having said that, almost any properly designed wall shelf would be an improvement over placing your LP12 on top of furniture.

I don't have a baseboard fitted. There are some subtle improvements to be had from removing it but beware if you use a Valhalla power supply since high voltages are then exposed.
