552 Update Specs...which serial numbers?

Posted by: David Antonelli on 14 March 2004

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new 552 in a few months here in canada. I heard that there were changes in the 552 at some stage after its initial release that led to improved sonic performance. Since pricey equipment moves slowly in Canada, it is possible that the model I buy may have left Salisbury quite a while back and may have missed these benefits. Does anybody know what these chages were, how longa gao they were made, and which serial numbers theys started shipping them on? Also, how significant are they and how much would it cost after I bought one to have it updated, in the event that it is not current specs?

David,

cannot comment on how many upgrades are available. I got my 552 end of Octobre 03(SN198xxx) and all upagrdes are in. AFAIK there are two, cable dressing and somewhat antistatic prevention.

Check with Naim, I was told that the change was VERY early in the production run which IIRC started in September 2002

Dave,

Asking your question was a good idea. After spending that amount of money on a pre, you wouldn't want to live without it for an update!

You know where Derek is, too busy enjoying his system Big Grin

Arun,

You said it! I realize I'll be getting a good price on it because of year end clearance, but I want to see in advance if it is an older one or a newer one, and if its older what cost would there be to bring it up to specs. Since its clearance, beggars (me) can't be choosers, but still want to know what I'm getting.

How's your buddy's system warming up? Have you wisened up and decided you NEED a 112/150 and not a nait? You know full well with your qualifications you'll be hooking your cell phone up to your fourth 552 in a few years time, so might as well get used to the upgrade bug now and start with a system that's more flexible!

Hi David,

We have a NAD pre amp you must hear. But if you insist, we could also talk about a 552. Remember - no PST in Alberta.

Dave,

My friend is waiting to submit his taxes and then he'll get a used CDX. After that I think he'll take a break and eventually get the hicap. The Nat 02 is singing beautifully though. As for me, the more I think about it, the more I want the separates now. But that means going on the notorious "Hi fi diet" and I've got so many other things to buy too! Funny you mention the cell phone. I want the Ericsson T68i so I can connect it to the Palm T3 via bluetooth. I'm so materialistic it's not even funny -- wannabe technophile and audiophile.

Bryan,

Maybe Dave could sell his whole Naim/WB system and save some space in his apartment by getting an integrated NAD system Wink

Arun,

My dad already has an NAD system. So I'll have to pass up your wonderful offer to trade in my system for NAD. Don't want to be too much of a chip off the old block! I am a technophile too. have wireless internet at home now, but I wish it was "worriless" internet as well. Since I got it I spend too much time deleting spam from my laptop when I should be reading or listening to my 01. The wirless hook up just makes it that much easier to get your junk mail!

Bryan,

Thanks for your offer, but I already have a good deal set up here in windsor, so I'll have to pass. I was in your store last June. I think you were in France. Good to finally see a naim system on demo in edmonton!
