Joni Mitchell

Been trying to replace 3 ageing copies of Don Juan's Recless Daughter on vinyl for ages. Has anyone come across a good CD copy digitally re-murdered or otherwise ? A few local stores have the CD but they seem just 80's issues. I would even be interested in a "mega pressing" type thang if any company has done one. Mobile Fidelity ?

Thanks...........

Don Juan's Reckless Daughter is available in the US and should available to order from any UK record shop. Alternatively, the likes of Amazon and HMV on the internet do have it. It was remastered in HDCD (along with the rest of the back catalogue) about 2 years ago, so make sure you get one of those. The sound is an improvement on the old CDs, however I'd rather have an original US vinyl - better musically!

PS The DCC's gold cd of Blue is fantastic and to my ears rather more musical than the HDCD Reprise version.

Be careful, as I've posted on this forum before - some Joni Mitchell CDs with HDCD stickers on, sold in the UK, are not in fact the HDCD remasters. The real ones should have the HDCD logo on the back cover and/or the CD label side.

Indeed, the German produced CDs can suffer from this. The answer is to purchase the US versions which also have upgraded liner booklets. Play DVD - www.play247.com - sells them for between £8 and £10.50 (but not Don Juan bizarrely).

Also, Both Sides Now has some tracks in HDCD and some not - god knows why.

I recently bought 'Hissing of summer lawns' and 'Mingus' from www.absound.ca - both were US remasters, and were absurdly cheap, they were in the AB Sound sale at 6.79 CA each... i.e. about three quid. Probably nearly as cheap when its not in the sale...

I managed to get an HDCD copy of "on Juan..." ast year in the US. It was about half the price I've seen it for here in the UK (as usual).

However, I'd really like to get a new (HDCD) copy of Hejira which, in my opinion, is Joni's best ever and top of my list of Desert Island discs! Sadly, the copy I have is not HDCD and, worse still, it "hisses" when played on the CDS2 - I guess it's too thin, but despite several layers of masking tape around the hole it still makes this awful noise when spinning on the machine. (I have exactly the same problem with K D Lang's "Ingenue" (both Warner Bros.))

I've never yet seen an HDCD version of Hejira. Has anyone seen this yet?

I bought this a little over a week ago at Tower Records in Toronto. It was also really cheap (approximately $7US), and I've no idea why. It's not hugely better than my original CD copy, but for that kind of money you can't go wrong. Catch you later!

Has anyone *recently* bought any Mitchell CDs from A&B Sound, and if so, are they still selling the HDCD versions (particularly "Blue")?

Tony's post above would indicate this to be so, but it's four years old!

Joni's HDCD recordings can be ordered from CDconnection. Just click on the Details link and the review will list if it's HDCD or not. I received Hejira, Hissing Of Summer Lawns & Miles Of Aisles in May and they they have HDCD on the back cover and the CD itself.

I would highly recommend buying Shadows & Light on both CD (HDCD) & DVD (if you have a multi-region player). Being able to see Joni's fantastic band playing S&L after listening to the CD is the best $22.40 you will ever spend (excluding shipping). The other bonus is seeing Pat & Jaco's Solo's on the DVD instead of PAt & Don's which appear on the CD.

If you make sure your order value (ignore Shipping costs) does not exceed $30, then no Import Duty will need to be paid. I have been caught out twice now with about £3.50 Duty + £4 Royal Mail handling charge and the bonus of 10 days being held up at Mount Pleasant Sorting Office.

Denis, thanks for the tip. I wanted to avoid signing up for yet another online store, but I might give it a try.
