5 best songs ever (Pop singles)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 27 May 2004

Any era, must have been on 78, or 45 or 12" single (33's ok)
OK, so I got the inspiration for this thread from Rasher!

Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty
Mama Told Me Not To Come (3 Dog Night - i think)
Behind The Mask - Greg Phillangains (spelling?) before Eric Clapton re-did it and ruined it.
Together In Electric Dreams - Georgio Moroder & Phil Oakey
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (yes, I love it!)

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

A Forest - The Cure
Zero - Smashing Pumpkins
Temple of Love - Sisters of Mercy
Stormchild - Trespass
Primary - The Cure

I must be in a "gothic" mood today......

Duel - Swervedriver
1979 - Smashing Pumpkins
Sympathy for the Devil - Sisters of Mercy version
Happy Together - The Turtles
20th Century Boy - T Rex

I never "got" Oh Superman.... I know it was highly regarded in some quarters, but I just didn't "get it".....

Today's 5...

A Forest - The Cure (again, still and forever - THE definitive Cure song)
Blue Monday - New Order (our Tune!)
Jimmy Jimmy - The Undertones (well any of the Undertones singles)
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
What Difference Does it Make - Smiths

Worthy mentions for ...

Buzzcocks
Madness
Virtually anything on the Stiff label (found a compilation double CD with all of the Stiff single releases, 43 songs, very few duff ones and many classics; Sex & Drugs, Alison, Joco Homo etc. etc.)

I think we are diametrically opposed with our musical taste blythe (see worst 5 songs thread) as Baker Street would have made it into my top 5 worst if I'd remembered it (I had successfully removed it from my memory until I saw it in your list above)

5, I'm not sure, but my fave is "My Girl" as performed by the Temptations. Well up there would be Martha and the Vandellas with "Dancing in the Street". Those two between them epitomise what can be truly great about pop for me, pushing lots of buttons in 3 minutes of bespoke catchiness.

For this week, I would have to list (not sure how "Pop" these are though):

(1) Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen; (2) Night Moves - Bob Seger; (3) Walking in Memphis - Marc Cohn; (4) Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John; and (5) Late in the Evening - Paul Simon.

For me, No. 1 would be a constant, while Nos. 2-5 vary depending on my mood and what I've been listening to recently.

Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who (has to be the long version)
Weekender - Flowered Up - what a brilliant record!
Careless Whisper - George Michael (It's that sax again!)
Hap-ki-do Kid - City Boy
Disco Inferno - The Trampps (Takes me back....)

As others have said, another day and feelings change!

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Great bubble gum music

Odyssey - Native New Yorker
Sister Sledge - Thinking of You (love that guitar break)
Van Halen - Jump
Free - Alright Now (specially at the 6th form disco's)
Beatles - everything (I cheated)

Colin Lorenson

I don't know why I feel that way. I just do.

Given that the thread is entitled "pop" rather than "rock" a couple of canditates:

Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls
Grace Jones - Slave to the Rhythm

Err - that's about it.

Unless of course we add various offerings from the Beatles or The Beach Boys.

Les Nuit - Nightmares on Wax
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
World In My Eyes - Depeche Mode
Avalon - Roxy Music
Heaven knows I am miserable now - The Smiths

I put it this way:

1 - Nearly everything by the Beatles.
2 - Nearly every top 10 hit from the 1960:s "golden era" 1965 - 1969.
3 - Every song on ELO:s "A new world record" (borrowed a DVD from a friend with ELO and I had simply forgotten how good the songs where!).
4 - Nearly everything from Motown in the 1960:s.
5 - American Pie by Don McLean (I would put Maddonas "version" of it on the top of "5 worst ever songs")

Blythe, most of your faves would be strong candidates for my 5 worst list!! Another man's meat etc etc. My five( this week at least, it changes with the weather), which I'm sure you'd hate:
Move On Up: Curtis Mayfield
Complete Control: The Clash
Marquee Moon, Television
Up with People: Lambchop
Everything Flows: Teenage Fanclub

btw: anyone read that great Paul Morley book about Kylie and Kraftwerk? ( The name escapes me).More lists than you could shake a stick at. Cost me a fortune catching up with stuff he mentioned that I realised I hadn't got.

Well, we do have something in common: Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield is an absolute classic! I love it to bits!
Anything by the Clash is also brilliant!
Never really got into Televison but they're fine :-)
Open your mind to all music!

At least I'm honest !!!
I do have to admit, that on the music forum, I have rarely heard of the music that is generally discussed..... I know I'm not the only person on here that enjoys middle of the road pop music!
Come on all you closet cases - methinks there is an element of snobbery at times....
By the way, "Careless Whisper" is an all time CLASSIC!!!!!! Or have you all had emotional by-passes? Razz

How about a subthread in honour of Blythe's honest: " Out of the Closet: songs you secretly love

"It's not right, but it's ok", Whitney Houston, wonderful song, much as it pains me to say it
