Rega Planet: rough, ragged, electronic, I simply can't hear what the fuss is about
Nait 5: musical.
IMO

The Planet in your picture is the original model from some years ago. The Planet 2000 is the newer model and I think it has been updated further. From my memory I would say the Naim is more dynamic and involving than the Planet 2000.
The CD5/CD5i is more in the price range of the Rega Jupiter which is a pretty good player. The Planet comparison may not be fair.

Indeed.
I have just gone to Jupiter from a Planet and it is a big, big upgrade.

"Spending money I don't have on things I don't need."
Mike,
That is pretty funny. I often feel the same way, but alas my love of music and obsession with sound quality overpower my rational side. I end up thinking maybe there is something I can do to get the more out of my system. Last weekend I was at a friends house - he has a fairly expensive Sony system with these real big Polk speakers and a big screen television. The system sounds horrible. Really unlistenable. I then go back home and realize that while my system is not perfect, it is certainly superior to nearly any home that I visit. Then the bills come in and I get depressed again.
By the way,
If anybody is thinking about buying a Jupiter, I would highly suggest the Cd5i. The 5i needs considerable break in time, but once it starts to sing it does not stop. Aside from musical tastes, the 5i's build quality is vastly superior to the Jupiter.

Years ago I used to own a Planet.
After a few months the Planet broke; while waiting for repair I bought a fairly inexpensive Philips CD 723 (90 € or so).
Did not miss the Planet at all. When the Planet returned, I was astonished at how better the Philips was, at a fraction of the cost. I sold the Planet then and never regret it.
Cheers, Betton

Mike,
Do Rega have an upgrade scheme similar to Naim's PIC tweak, allowing those nasty copy-protected CD's to be played?

Im very sorry but a Rega Planet is a bloody good CD player.
I have a 2000 model and it kicks.
Harsh, brittle, can't see what the fuss is?
PAH I say PAH!!!
Best CD player for the money in the world more like! A friend has an older Planet like the one in the picture and it's sonding a little old but it blows his similar vintage Rotel to the weeds.
The CD5i is far better but it's nearly double the price so it should be better.
I agree with the comments on the CD5i vs Jupiter. My experience too.
The Planet and Naim CD players are very similar in their ideas : play music 1st, hifi later. The low mass manual clamp, decoupling and compliance ideas are similar too.
If I couldn't afford a Naim I'd get a Planet.
I would say that it isn't in your face and aggressive, and for some people it might not do it like they want. But if you value tyiming and tight fast bass with real emotion, the Planet is NUMERO UNO!

To Betton. I used to not have any CD player then I listened to the REGA. None of those chepies are even worth listening to for anything other than background filler!
Getting back to the topic I have the original planet but I now use an external DAC MSB link DAC 3 This just wasa icing on the cake. Maybe not as good as the NAIM but pretty darn good. A very smooth detailed lively sound with just enough air and sound stage backed by really good bas definition.
Much closer to a naim cd player and very reliable.

Hi Ludwig
So far I have not had any problems with copy-protected CDs, but I do listen to vinyl mostly.

Hi KENB
please re-read my post carefully. Did I say that the (original) Planet is a bad player? No, actually I bought one: in my home it clearly bettered a Rotel and a Marantz counterparts (by the way, I dislike Marantz players, with the exception of the CD7).
But in my system the Philips was way ahead of the Planet in terms of involvement and dynamics (have you listened to the CD723?).
My point is: when choosing new stuff home listen is mandatory.
Cheers, Betton
