Eerie music recommendations...

Aka "music to give you the creeps", 'spec. when listened to in the dark late at night.
Really looking for sparse, eerie, atmospheric stuff but it has to be basically decent music.
Any recs?
John

Halloween a couple of years ago I set out nightlights all along the front path, opened the windows wide and had "Threnody for Soulds in Torment" from the Robert Fripp String Quintet CD "The Bridge Between" playing loud into the night.
Didn't really bother the kids coming guising as they'd scented the chocoalte muffins I'd made, but some of their adult minders were really quite thoroughly disturbed by it. And I'm not surprised, it's easily the scariest piece of music I've ever heard. A former flatmate just couldn't have it on in the house, she found it did her head in. Sleeve notes for the disc refer to "terrifying despiar" in that track, and I think that's a good description. Though nothing else on the disc is anything like it.
Fripp's "Gates of Paradise" soundscape doesn't go quite as far off the radar at peak times but is more sustained, having some fairly terrifying stuff (as well as much truly sublime beauty). Once described by a merchandising stall man at a ProjeKCt gig along the lines of "this CD will kill your dog and shred your wallpaper".
Quite a bit of Talking Heads' "Remain in Light" is pretty creepy. Especially the closer, "The Overload".
Pete.

Aphex Twin - 'Selected Ambient Music Vol 2'. It's like a soundtrack to some horrific sci-fi horror film. Genuinely scary.
Pederecki's 'Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima' is quite moody too....

"Nosferatu" by Liminal. Written to accompany F. W. Murnau's classic silent vampire film "Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror", starring the creepiest of all actors, Max Schreck. 'Nuff said!

Forget PRAT, a true measure of a system is its ability to scare the shit out of you.
OST to Mulholland Falls is pretty good.

"Whomanfoursays" by Lisa Dalbello has some pretty psychotic stuff. I personally find some of Sylvian's records unnerving; my kids won't listen to "Secrets of the Beehive".
As I said in the late night thread, Bill Evans "Alone" gives me a profound case of the willies. He isn't "Solo", he's "Alone", and the difference is audibly clear.

Throbbing Gristle - Genesis P Orridge's voice [as well as the kiddie laughs and screams in the background - this was meant to replicate the tapes Brady made] on Persuasion [from 20 Jazz Funk Greats] and the whole sound on Weeping [3rd Annual Report]...
John Moran - The Manson Family, An Opera [possibly the only opera to feature Iggy Pop], also my candidate for the most underrated record of the last 20 years...
Various examples from the Residents - the list would change frequently but their version of Sun Ra's Space is the Place, called Daydream in Space [where they imitate Barry White on top of some great electro sounds] which I'm sure they think is hysterical is actually v. creepy...
Finally - although it is probably cliched to say so - The Kids from Lou Reed's Berlin, again because of knowing the story about how they got the kiddies to blab so realistically...
And the good thing is just how well a CDS3 and SL2 brings out these details...

How about White Noise's 'Black Mass: An Electric Storm In Hell' from 'An Electric Storm'? Or come to that, the previous track, 'The Visitation'? Both have got a Nigel Kneale/Most Haunted sort of feel [probably Delia Derbyshire had been at the Wincarnis - again], and those pre-synth ring modulators etc pack a punch that modern digital equipment doesn't approach. Very intense, and extremely scary. The Island reissue has great sound quality, and if you've never heard it, you really should. The album is unique and a real landmark - by the time that anyone tried to make an electronic rock album again, synths had made the sound blander and more approachable.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Diamanda Galas yet. Her "Divine Punishment" album is a geat one for producing an instant anxiety attack. I think on the back cover she says, "Correct playback at maximum volume only." Turn out the lights to experience it fully.
It's great stuff to have on hand for shock value. Want to get rid of the in-laws who've been visiting a bit too long? Put Diamanda Galas on the hi-fi and crank up the volume. Guaranteed results.
Her stuff is generally well recorded, by the way.

Try anything by 'Elend'
An Austrian 3 piece combining synths & violins in a classical, ambient, doom style, featuring soprano vocals interspersed with death grunts, growling and shrieking.
They have a trilogy of albums dealing with Lucifers fall from grace as portrayed in Milton's 'Paradise Lost'.
It's a laugh a minute when I put this stuff on - the best room clearing device I know of (apart from flatulence)

Great, lots of recommendations to check out!
I've been doing some listening to Miranda Sex Garden lately (hey, ex marginal-goth tendencies coming to the fore) and some of that's quite creepy. As is some of "Tales of mystery & imagination" by Alan Parsons Project. But then I'm a big Poe fan anyway, so that album always struck a chord.
