"the bargain source component of the year"
Posted by: TomK on 08 April 2004
I just bought a few back issues of Hi-Fi News and was interested to see a well known piece of kit described as “the bargain source component of the year”. Anybody remember which it was?

Sounds supiciously like something written by KK
IMO I would treat it with caution

I have a feeling it was the CDS3!

CDX2 wasn't it?

And the prize goes to NB. I confess I chuckled when I read the review as I normally associate bargain with "24 cans of lager for 12 quid at ASDA" or something like that. However I suppose it's all relative. I know how happy I am with my CDX2/XPS2 so I'd probably regard them as a bargain.

I think it's in reference to Martin Colloms review of CDS3 and how far it was ahead of anything else he had heard at the time irrespective of cost.

Don't forget to block off the lid, adds 5% to the sound don't you know.

Martin Colloms (I think?) reckoned that bright sunlight falling on the smoked lid of the '3' audibly degraded the sound.
There is some logic in that.
Not a piss take.

Actually, I remember reading it was the other way round, that sunlight improved the soundquality. I'd have to ask my dealer though, he's the one who still has teh HiFi News.
But seriously. How can you express something like that in per cents?
Ow, the explanation of clouds passing by and throwing shadows on the player was comletely brilliant!
Cheers!

Kevin; I can assure you that it was as I stated - i.e. bright light had a deleterious effect.
What I find hard to believe was that MC reckoned that he could hear the sound quality changing as clouds came and went, exposing direct sunlight, striking the player through a window.
And yes; MC does have this numerical rating system which strikes me as absolute bollocks.

well, he claimed the same effect for Krell kps25s.
For life of me, I can't hear the difference between shutter clear or opaque nor blocking the top acrylic cover alltogether!
As for CDS3, removing a protective cover from the lid had a subtle improvement in clairty and focus. Other than that, I haven't really bothered blocking its lid to see if i hear any difference. ( this is just way too silly )

If I remember correctly there's some objectivity behind the ratings i.e. they're all broken down into more assessable categories and combine to give a final score.
I think though, more importantly, some of us here need to be less critical and perhaps look before we leap.
