Cleaning the silver discs???

Posted by: andy c on 24 March 2004

So, when you actually sin and get dust/fingerprints etc on em, what do you use to clean em with?

any sonic benefits to specific makes/fluids etc (LOL)?

cheers for any replies,

andy c!

Hi andy c

I don't normally clean my little silver discs at all, (assumes smug self-satisifed tone) as I prefer careful handling in order to prevent the dirt Wink, but I found an Audio Technica electronic cd cleaning thingamajig the other day, complete with the little fluid it was originally supplied with, so will deliberately dirty up a disc in order to test it out. I'll let you know how it cleans and what the sonic benefits of a spotless Dirty Vegas album are tomorrow.

Never Cleaned a CD in my life other than the occasional blow or quick wipe with a clean dry hanky.

I hear that strawberry jam works well - you can still play the discs as well - he he he...

Try THAT on a modern disc - bye bye lacquer...

I use a T-shirt and that's it. Any I buy stay clean, but I've used this on dirty second hand discs and provided you clean centre->edge in straight lines and don't rub TOO hard it works a treat.

Cleaners often get the disc more dirty than they were before IME.

I would avoid getting ANYTHING with silicone anywhere near a system!

Windolene works for me, with a lint-free cloth.

Windolene is slightly abrasive I think.

I would hope that suggestion has been detected as 'in jest'?

I use a spectacle cleaning cloth (dry); occasionally for obvious gunk. For more stubborn stuff, I use a pre-moistened spectacle wipe. The solution evaporates off, leaving no visible residue.

Always wipe from centre to edge.

Fairy Liquid applied using fingers under a running tap. Dab dry with paper towels, then a gentle buff with a clean hanky.
Done this since the CD was introduced, and no problems to report.

like mike i use a little mr. muscle window cleaner
(in the green spray bottle) use soft toilet tissue from center hole to outside edge (gently)
works a treat on cds and ive even used this method on rented dvds from blockbusters which were so mucky n scratched they wouldnt read but after mr. muscle they played right through NO PROBLEM!!
and no its not an abrasive and wont do any harm!
try it yourself-it works!

All I've ever done is "huff" on them and wipe radially outward from the centre with my t-shirt or whatever cloth I've got.
Sometimes this has helped with computer disks.
(On the other hand, as per the original marketing, you could try spreading jam on them!)
