AV2 center channel amplification ?

Posted by: Roy Donaldson on 22 April 2004

Hi there,

I currently run an AV2 into 2 x 140's and then front and rear speakers. I have managed to come across a nice matching center for my front speakers.

What would people suggest I look at doing for powering this center channel now ? a 90.2 ? get a 175 and power the center and rears with it ?

Also, if I use a stereo amp, how do I wire this up ? Do I only use one channel on it ? It seems a bit of a waste, is there any way to use the full power of the amp ?

Thanks,
Roy.

Well you could get a V145 which is the mono equivalent of a 250 as described by naim here>

Hi Roy,

For surround duties with my AV2 I use a pair of NAP 90s (90.3). One does the rear speakers and one is dedicated solely to the centre channel.

This works fine for me - the power supply in the centre 90 is just being used for one channel so it doesn't 'flag' under the strain. In this way I don't consider it to be a waste, but more of a built in power supply upgrade (and we all know how important power supplies are!)

You'll note that the din output on the AV2 carries the centre channel signal and the subwoofer channel also. The full range centre channel is sent via the LEFT channel so you need to plug your centre speaker into the CH1 (Left) output.

If you plug into the right channel you'll get a very bassy centre speaker!

I have the subwoofer turned off on my AV2 configuration (I think I did this anyway) - this will mute any signal to the right channel, in which case you'd get silence if you plugged into it.

I'm pleased to be able to 'recycle' some of my older kit in this way, but when I get around to it I'll probably move to a NAPV175 and use it for centre and rears.

Cheers!

Richard.
