More Nuno style deliberations...
Posted by: Top Cat on 17 March 2004
Hi folks.
First I was going to buy one, then I wasn't, and now I possibly am once again. This Fraim demon, it is very persuasive. AFter letting one s/h Fraim escape, another has turned up with teh right number of shelves at a reasonable (not cheap but not too dear) price.
My system:
LP12/Aro/Armageddon/Prefix K*
52/SC/250 (all recent Olive)
...into Audio Physic Virgo mkIII speakers.
Rack is QS Reference & mains is sorted, cables are Naim too.
Given that, if I can find a buyer for my 6-tier Oak QS Ref (configured as two seperate low racks and including a wall shelf bracket should its next owner require it), it will cost me around £1200-1400 extra to move to this 7-shelf Fraim, I could also move to a mkII 250, which would make the most sense? I won't do the Fraim switch unless I find a buyer for the QS, though the move to a new 250 would factor in a trade or private sale of the existing 250...
QS Ref->Fraim: cost £1400
250->250mkII: cost £1200
...nothing else needs changing, and I'm very happy with tt, cdp, preamp and all the other bits.
I know I said 'I'm done' but hey the demon won't go away, it keeps whispering in my ear...
So, as a kind of 'swansong' upgrade, which makes the most sense? My speakers are a relatively benign load (4ohm90db) and the QS Ref is a great rack in its own right.
Or, should I stick where I am and stop looking at s/h Fraims when they appear, or think about new 250s...???
Ta folks.
John

I can't see that Fraim and that chair could happily co-exist in the same room anyway - after all, one's stylish and one's not.
I think the Fraim looks quite nice, actually, and I know you can't mean the chair...
...but yes, that was me, and I am otherwise done. Honest.

John, they do different things, some people will prefer one, others the other, it sort of depends what you are looking for, or in what area your system coudl perform better. Since you have non naim speakers and a non naim CD player, I actually think the 250-2 would probably be better, but I don't know, it is hard to comment.

John,
Have you tried Mana? I hear they make some crackling supports.

Cough... I'd rather not, I've owned enough of it in my time to realise when it's beat. If QS Ref can beat it, then Fraim must decimate it...
Plus, of all the Naim systems I've heard, the worst were always on Mana. Which is largely why it took me so long to realise that the screechy, metallic Naim sound wasn't the Naim sound at all - but anyway, I digress.
My thread, don't want to waste it talking about ugly black angle iron...

I agree Joe, I think TC should try Mana. He'd have hours of fun setting it up. I've heard DNM amps are rather good too.

Yo G.I. Joe,
Whaddya mean you "hear" that Mana make good supports? I thought you owned some Mana, or are you just trying to be your witty self

John,
You let one s/h Fraim get away from you and now you are thinking of letting another slip away??? Bad naimophile! Seriously, you could always buy it to try out and re-sell it without much of a loss if you wanted. Try that with a new 250.
Keep the olive system intact man!

I was trying to be my witty self -- and apparently failed.
OK, forget about stands. I think John should get a Nait 2. I hear it's a crackling little amp.

Only "crackling" when the pots need replacing of course...

Where do you mnage to find all these s/h Fraims? I've only ever seen 2 (and they were the "wrong" finish!

Just checked my "English" English dictionary... to discover that the word I should have used is cracking, not crackling.
D'oh!
Well, from now on I shall stick to Kentuckyisms -- I hear the Nait 2 is a good ol' boy of an integrated amp. Does the tune right proper. All y'alls should buy one.

Joe,
I just love it when you go all American!
Dev-boy
ps. I reckon TC should change his name to Jah Shaka and then should dump everything and get a set of Technics 1210 decks a NuMark Mixer a Nait and some PA speakers -- all on Phase 17 Mana.

Jah knowsIIRC (and that's a rather big if...) Shaka only uses one deck. Oh and I think the tweeters are driven by tube amps...
Great to see TC is so nobly stepping into the breech now that Nuno has made up his mind and NB is engaged in home decoration!

What's the Asterisk for John?
Still to be fitted, perhaps?

Roy - replied, check your PTs.
Charles - when shall we do the Prefix thang?

I cant believe a shelving system will be a better upgrade than electronics.
Shelves cables etc in my experience fine tune a system not change it, I would go for the amp upgrade.
Posted on: 26 March 2004 by Top Cat
Alex, I've decided to do neither. I quite relish the challenge of designing and constructing my own racks, so I'm going down that route instead. I'm putting the money saved into (a) kitchen appliances (yawn) and (b) a nice pair of binoculars - maybe Swarovski EL 8x32 if I can find a slightly cheaper price...

Sorry John, big mistake,
You'll only end up doing this all over again in 6 months time. Just get the Fraim and
know you've got the best you can get.
As a very simple demonstration of how good it is, see if you can borrow just a single Fraim base. Play your favourite demo on your current set up and then transfer your CD player to the Fraim and play it again. Then decide if you can make do with anything less.
Then and only then should you get a new pair of binoculars so that you can spend the time spying on your neighbours
