CD/HC2 vs CDX2
Posted by: Clifford on 16 April 2004
Hi,
I am new on this forum.
My current system :
I am very happy with my setup that give me lot of pleasure to listen to.
Has everybody a similar system than mine ?
What give me the addition of a CDX2 in the place of CD5/HC2? this combo has taken long time to burn-in (about 2 months) and yet the music is more evident and so natural.
Any advice should be welcome.
Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum Clifford.
There has been lots of discussion and opinions on the benefits of CDX2 over CD5 etc over the past year, if you do a search will will find lots of info (many of it conflicting).
However if you have only had your CD5/HC for a couple of months I would take time to enjoy your system as is for a while, unless you feel your system is lacking in someway.
Perhaps you could tell us what the rest of your system is, your post seems to have omitted this info (with the exception of the CD5/HC info).

I have forgotten giving my current system:
CD5-HC2 / 202/HC2 / 200 and B&W805
2*5.5m of NACA5
Sorry

The CD5/HI vs. CDX2 is actually fairly simple. If you addition, you'll be spending money. The CDX2 is much better than the CD5/HI. I actually prefered a CDX2/NAIT5 to a 202/200/CD5/HI.
I think it's worth it. But you do have to feel the same about that. Jsut do the demo, if you can afford it.
But I do have to agree with greeny as well. Enjoy the system for a while. It's just a couple of months old. The CD5/HI is a very good player. Just shrug off any thoughts of upgrading
.
Cheers!

I did the following demos recently: CD5, CD5+FC2, CD5+HC2 and CDX2. I agree with the other posters - the CDX2 was head and shoulders the best. I thought (and still think) the CD5+HC2 was a great combo, but I could tell the clear superiority of the CDX2 in a matter of seconds. For someone like me, whose non-Naim cdp is well below a bare CD5, I think it is an easy decision to say the CDX2 is worth the extra cash over the CD5+HC2 (not a huge price difference). However, the CD5+HC2 really is an excellent combo, and whether it is worth the extra money to move from that up to the CDX2 may depend on how much you can get for the CD5+HC2 (or if you have another use for the HC2). As others have mentioned, you must do the demo. Don't be suprised, however, if you it winds up costing you money!

Hi Clifford
I did the comparison back when I bought my CDX2 (so I think you can probably see where I'm going with this...)
I tried CD5, CD5+Hi, CDX2 & CDX2+XPS2. For me, there was a clear improvement with each step, but the X2 was definitely above the 5+Hi, and as to the XPS2 - well just don't go there until you can afford it, because you will want one, trust me
J
PS, have you got an NAPSC yet for your 202? I've not done the audition, but everyone I've spoken to (including my dealer) who's compared says it's a big improvement, & VFM wise even better than the Hi.

THANKS ALL FOR THESE ADVICES.
ALL YOUR COMMENTS HELP ME A LOT.
I AM GOING TO DEMOED A CDX2 SOON BUT IT'S NOW CLEAR FOR ME THAT IT WILL PROBLABLY BE MY NEXT UPGRADE...
WHAT ABOUT THE 202 WITH A CDX2? I THINK THAT THIS PREAMP WITH A HC2 I VERY MUSICAL - FOR ME IT'S A CLASSIC NAIM...ESPECIALLY WITH A 200.I DONT WANT TO CHANGE MY PREAMP/HC/AMP.

Hi Clifford
CDX is worthwhile upgrade on CD5 - for me CDX just sounds so much smoother and detailed.
Trouble is, you then wonder what XPS sounds like added to CDX - which i also did..and then bought.
It never ends though. I heard a CDS2 a while back....oh dear...now its CDS3....made my CDX sound a poor relation in direct comparison, but once out of my head i went back to really enjoying my CDX. Same maybe with your CD5, if you can get CDX thoughts out of your head.
There has to be a point when you just enjoy and stop thinking about upgrades...im v happy with my CDX and would rather have another few hundred CD's/records than go to CDS2...at the mo...

Lee

Instead of stressing over upgraditis, sit in front of your system and like a meditation process when thoughts of more expensvie gear comes to mind just say "thinking" and let it go. And then just pleasure in what you really do hear. I've put off buying a CDX2 for 4 months now, I guess it's a bit like quiting smoking, there is always the desire there, but acting on it is not done.
