CDI having trouble reading later tracks on CD's

Posted by: Adam G on 15 April 2004

I bought a CDI a few weeks ago. It sounds absolutely amazing, as you can imagine it was a vast improvement over my DVD player that I have beeen using as a CD player for the last 2 years...
The only thing is, it seems to have trouble skipping to tracks from 4 or 5 onwards... from about 4 or 5 onwards it will read them intermittently, majority of the time not at all. The puck that I got with the CDI is a dual rubber hooped one. I got a replacement from the shop, which was a single rubber hooped one but still the same problem occurs. Apparently this is a puck problem that is causing the unreadable CD's... Can anyone confirm this? I am awaiting a replacement dual rubber hooped puck from Naim at the moment...
Thanks

Adam

I should also add that the original dual hooped puck that I got with the CDI, had the rubber rings squashed where the previous owner had left CD's in the player...

I have a CDI - good player, but can have trouble reading discs from time to time, 'squashing' the rubbers on the puck helps, as does cleaning the laser and 'hub'. However if the nextel ring is worn (as mine is) it may need to be breathed on by Naim. There's a few posts on this forum on this subject.

Also adding another thing that if I play the CD, it will play right the way through all tracks... This particular problem only occurs when I try and skip to particular tracks that are later on the CD...
Thanks for your response Fisbey, I will checkout the other threads now...

Adam,

Both my Dad and I have CDI's and mine is fine but his does the same as yours. I have found though that if you clean the top of the mechanism where you place the CD with bluetack regularily this does seem to help. If however this does not do the trick, you may have the need for an imminent mechanism replacement, which is quite expensive, but worth all of the money.

should this improve the sound quality too? if I have to send it away to be repaired? I bought it about 4 weeks ago for £725... Couldnt really afford to buy it to begin with, but dont regret it one bit... If I have to fork out for a new mechanism, I would really like to know if it will improve the sound quality too... Although actually being able to skip to tracks that I want to listen to will be a big bonus! Any idea of price for a replacement?

Adam , I have a 1993 CDI and some months ago had the same problem.I tried with a new puck (with 3 rubbers) and the problem dissapeared.

Hope this helps

I have had this with my (2 months old!) CD5...

Turned out to be dirty inner "holes" on the CDs, from where I've habitually picked up the discs with one finger in the hole and one on the outer edge; where my fingers slip and mar the middle area of the disc where the puck grips, grease is left...

Blu-tak'ing the disc cured the problem in all cases...

Using a Dell PC with one of those laptop style drives exacarbates my problems, since the location of the drive is under the desk, so a PITA to find without getting fingerprints and grease all over the label side of the disc. D'oh!

I take great care over my CD's to not get dirt or dust on them, or drop them, or scratch them...
However I do pick them up one finger on the inner hole and thumb on the outer edge... I will take all this advice into account, try one thing at a time, and let you know of the results...
I will pick up the new puck on saturday from my dealers, so should be able to give you an answer by then...

Its sounds like disk slippage Adam.

Your two rubber puck is flattened but you have replaced it with a one rubber puck which is not always reliable. You need a new two rubber puck.

Clean the nextal ring with a damp cloth with washing liquid on. Make sure it is barely damp! Under no circumstance clean the lens, people on this very website have suggested to put blu tak on the lens before, good god.

Hi
I had a similar problem with my CD5 and telephoned Naim for advice.
They asked me if the problem occured with all disks or just CDR's, which was in fact the case (never thought of that)and told me to try burning at a lower speed. This cured the prob for me, just a thought in case yours is the same prob.

Jim

Adam,

Mine is the same. Top hat with 2 squashed rubbers. It plays some CDs no problem. Others it will not spin them up to jump through tracks. It all hinges on the condition of the nexel ring and the thickness of the CD. I have never cleaned mine in years and someone suggested blutack, as does the manual. I haven't bothered as I don't have any! Older thicker CDs work great as the weight I assume helps. New ones with an indent like those by WEA are bad and create an error if you jump tracks. You can build up the CD with paper washers(no I haven't bothered) or just play it start to finish like a LP( my prefered option).

So just tell yourself it is not the CDi that's the problem but the thin CD and if it sounds so analogue it must be a LP and play it straight through ;O)

Hi all,

Thanks for all your responses...
Monkfish: I VERY rarely play CDR's in the CD player. They are invariably always originals.

I am back home tonight, so will check the condition of the nextel ring, and will pick up my new 2 hooped puck tomorrow hopefully. Will report back...

I had a nice delivery to work of 12" singles today, so I think I can hold off playing the CD player till tomorrow... Smile

Thanks

Adam

WHAT is it with damn Wea pressings? Surely it can't save THAT much money missing out one milli-micro-milli-nano-gram of polycarbinate in making that centre hole too thin???

I mean, back in the mid 80s their pressings (done by Polygram I guess) were way better...

Hi all,

I picked up the new puck today, with 2 hoops. Still the same thing happens on some CD's, although it solved the problem on some that it used to have trouble with.
I then remembered someone saying in another thread, to put a small piece of paper with a hole cut out between the CD and the puck...
This has solved the problem on every disc...
Now I just the little piece of paper right nest to the CD player and away I go!

Thanks for everyones responses on this... It all helped...

Adam
