What's with the new craze for username downsizing?

Posted by: Steve Toy on 17 October 2004

Alexgerrard became AlexG, and only in the last couple of days, Ludwig and Matthew Robinson have become Ludders and Matthewr respectively.

Right, I want to be Steve Toy. That way nobody is going to (accidentally) misspell my first name as Stephen.

Regards,

Steve.

Mekon,

You may be right. I was okay with others calling me Ludders but now I'm not so hot on calling myself Ludders. Perhaps I should've followed Matthew's lead and hired a group of brand consultants before making the change. Hrmph.

Matthew,

Too Goth, too '20s. Good lord, man! Don't make me suggest Wonton or the Spider-Man font.

The next step is to take each other's names to really throw the sock burners and easily offended clients off the scent.

Ross - I really am just SO pleased that you like my name. It's the nicest thing that has happened to me all week, in fact Cool.

It derives from one of the two Dungeons & Dragons games that I attempted to play in the 70's with Nick Lees and a guy called shazbut, a mutual schoolfriend who used to post here and that I was drafted in on Mr Lees' orders to taunt. [He has sadistic tendencies that belie his avuncular forum persona, let me tell you..... oh, yes - **** BIGTIME **** !! You lot don't know the half of it]. shazbut sadly faded way, but I seem to have persisted like a difficult stain.... [although we never carried on with D&D - I mean, really...]

Throbnorth seemed vaguely heroic in a Michael Moorcock-y sort of a way, and also could be shortened to my current loveable 'throb'. The alternative was a name used in my first D&D game - 'Big Gordon', which although has a certain charm, comes with Vulgar Overtones.

My given name is, sadly, almost identical to that of perhaps the most obnoxious poster on the forum and thus can never be revealed in case there might be any confusion ....

Big Gordon

Another forum I read changed software recently and a number of people saw fit to change their username to something completely different.

Someone soon started a thread in which people try to guess who used to be 'x' in their previous (forum) life.

I hardly sleep now, I find it really worrying that I might be polite to people who, in their previous forum life, used to get on my wick. Winker Therefore, it should not be allowed to change your username....ever.

Same for me. Hence the 'sour grapes' above.

Since when did it become alright to admit you played D&D in polite company?

Hi Throb

Well I'm SO SO pleased that you're SO pleased that I like your nom de plume!

I always get a Finbar Saunders type of fnaar-chuckle when I see one of your posts "throbnorth" with member status as opposed to junior member or enhanced member or in my case shrunken member. Big Gordon is a nice touch and convenient as an alternative if you feel the need for a change. Don't know about Moorcock though - perhaps a bit too far.

I was always intrigued by VV's real name. Sure the surname was the real McSonavitch, but the conveniently abbreviated nickname always interested me. I'm pretty sure that years ago I sent him an email about the early Vukwich and some of the snaps he'd taken and as an aside enquired about the first name. Never got a response on that bit. I suppose it might have been because it was a Gideon, Tarquin, Igor, Phineous, Selwyn or Lachlan type of name. But who knows.

If he still lurks here every now and then maybe he'll hide a hint in between the ball-bearing and the hex-nut!

Now, "perhaps the most obnoxious poster on the forum!" - that's got my head throbbing!

all the best

Ross

GUYS ! FFS ! If half the forum has a mid-life crisis and wants a new alias, some poor bastard will have to sit in front of a screen for a few hours to change the names !

Whether twunt or hero, you'll still be the same whatever label is stuck on the end of your posts.

Leave it!

Sorry Ross, - I've just caught sight of Fern Britton on Room 101 and am deprived of rational thought - will reply tomorrow...

I think one can order a "Big Gordon" (chicken or beef) at Taco Bell these days. Can't beat that pillowy flatbread. No sir.

Steve, this is currently a front runner in the Most Meaningless Post of the Year Awards.

Thanks Matthew

Please pass on my best wishes to him.

If you know of any fora that he contributes to perhaps you could send me a PM - always enjoyed the spectacle of electronic bloodsports mixed with strongly held opinions!

I think Tarquin McSonovitch is rather good. Make a good VIZ character to challenge the Bacons or debate family values with Eight Ace.

Cheers

Ross,

I don't think he posts anywhere now. Of the 12 people deemed intelligent enough to converse with, 2 were his own online alter egos, 4 had sworn an oath to settle differences only via physical combat (usually fencing, occasionally wrestling), 1 had gone mad and the rest had had the good grace to get themselves banned.

You can find his photgraphs at http://www.avzine.com/vuk/fotov.htm though.

Perhaps.

But it was a response to AlexG's question about my system - present and future.

Also, I don't think Naim-audio would upset potential customers by giving them silly names.

I hope you find this post slightly less meaningless.

Regards,

Steve.

That doesn't make it any less meaningless.

Steve, of course Naim wouldn't give a member an unwanted username; please don't tell me you thought they'd do it even for a nanosecond. You took Alex' bait big time.
