Van Morrison ?

Picked up his greatest hits from the library and it's not bad.
I know that GH or Best ofs are not the beat way of judging an artist so I was wondering where to start.
Astral Weeks and Moondance get 5* on AMG.

Echo Astral Weeks, Tupelo Honey, and Moondance. If after listening to those you don't find yourself hooked, Van probably isn't your man.
Too Long In Exile has some great moments. It's up and down, but worth it. (Best not to mention his album with the Chieftans, but I will anyway. Fun stuff - I have it on emerald green see-through vinyl.)
Reading Yeats has added tremendously to my appreciation of where Van's coming from. You know, if you're into that and all.

The 3 CDs I purchased for £7 were Astral Weeks, Moondance and His Band and the Street Choir.
See how we get on with them.

Is there any truth to the ugly rumour that VM duetted with Sir Cliff Richard?
Posted on: 18 January 2005 by Rasher
Yes, it's true. Sickening isn't it! and I bet his popularity has suffered because of it too, which probably is deserved for such a stupid idea.
I can't think what Sir Cliff was thinking about.

Sir Cliff was an unwitting pawn in an attempt by VM to alienate and offload his fanbase of ageing sociology lecturers, and so become more acceptable to the kidz.

I don't think SirCliff is going to increase VM's appeal to ANYONE... except perhaps that happy-clappy bird who does the sport and tennis commentary... Sue Barker/Breaker, something like that? Well, her and other happy-clappy sorts!
Cliff Richard, eh? Someday, perhaps a cure can be found...!

If you like VAn Morrison then "Them" are a must. From the raw, 'Gloria' to the sublime 'Hey Girl'
his best period for me was from Astral Weeks to Vedon Fleece, after that he gets a bit hit and miss.
Oh, by the way it is possible to like Led Zeppelin and Van Morrison. Queen, however are a definate NO
Music IS Analogue

I do not really follow this forum much, spending most of my time on the Hi-Fi part of the forum. This thread caught my eye.
Van Morrison is quite simply VAN THE MAN.
How anyone can speak ill of one of the MOST Soul/RnB white musicians of all time remains a mystery to me. May I just list in no particular order
Bright Side of the Road-Full Force Gale-And it Stoned Me-Domino-Wild Night-Cleaning Windows-Tupelo Honey
To quote from the song Cleaning Windows:
"I heard Lead Belly and Blind Lemon on the street where I was born. Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Muddy Waters singing I'm a Rolling Stone".
I had the pleasure of seeing Van several times over the last 25 years however one time will remain memorable. The city of Florence Italy gave permission to Van to perform for two nights in the cities historic Opera Hall in 1983. This was not a "rock'n'roll" concert - it was a Soul/Rhythm&Blues Extravaganza!!!

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with him to be honest. At one point I thought he was the DB's but more recently I have come to think he is highly derivative and prone to bouts of cliche. I still listen and enjoy some of his albums but he is not the godlike genius that some claim. I really like 'sense of wonder' despite the sneaking feeling that is is actually a load of bollo***!

Well, this thread has caused me to give Astral Weeks a spin for the first time in ages, and I'm very glad that I did!

So, having listened to Astral Weeks, I'm now onto Moondance. Quite marvellous.

Pontification Alert
Okay, here's my $.02...
1) Pink Floyd, great stuff, particularly 60's stuff.
2) Zeppelin alright, but declines in value after LZ II.
3) Queen very entertaining, you gotta admit "Bohemian Rhapsody" is the most ambitious pop single ever.
But that's not what this is about, izzit? Every ten years or so, after reading a critics' list of the All Time Best Albums or whatever, I try and get into Astral Weeks and fail; is it because of the unrehearsed nature of the performance, or just because it's @#$%&* out of tune? Dunno. I do love the greatest hits CD (forget the title), and "Into The Mystic" is incredibly moving.
My greatest admiration, however, goes to the first Them album (on Decca). That's right: the one with "Gloria". Gives the Stones from the same period a run for their money.

Eh? Are you sure? What about Good Vibrations, nine years previously.
Bo Rap, as I believe it is known, is just overegged camp.

No, it's because it's overrated, twee, precious rubbish. As simple as that. Life's too short, mate, to keep trying to keep up with the cloth-eared critical establishment. Stop trying to get into
Arse Weaks and listen to something decent instead.
Kevin (not falling for any of it)
