The 1st Midland Riders evening...

Posted by: andy c on 27 July 2004

Hi,
this happened the sunday just gone and involved the below players:
Ernie (the recorder - for his studious note taking of music played)
Roger P (for casting his battle hardened eyes and ears over proceedings)
Roger40 (for flogging me his Lp12 hence ensuring the LP's played sounded at least ok)
Docktor Pete (pro hi-fi dealer, LP12 wizard and purveyor of SL2's)
Shelley C (for making the evening what it was with fine food etc)
Jaynie (for keeping everyone under control)
Apologies: David C, NB, alexgerrard.

Music played included selected tracks from:
1 Diana Krall The girl in the other room CD
2 Mindy Smith One moment more CD
3 David Lindley and Hani Naser Planting even better… CD
4 Kodo Best of CD
5 Simply Red Picture Book CD
6 Faithless No roots CD
7 Solomon Burke Don’t give up on me CD
8 The Police Message in a box – the complete recordings CD
9 India Arie Acoustic Soul CD
10 Talk Talk The Colour of Spring Vinyl
11 The Impressions The Impressions: 28 Original hits Vinyl
12 Jimmy Smith The unpredictable Jimmy Smith - Bashin’ Vinyl
13 Frank Sinatra Songs for Swinging Lovers CD
14 Tiny Island Tiny Island CD – Opus3cd19804
15 Big Band Basie with Clarke Terry and Frank Wess CD – RR63cd
16 Paul Simon You’re the one CD
17 Various Artist Jazz at the pawnshop Vol. 1 CD
18 Bob Marley Exodus CD - 2001 remastered deluxe edition
19 Kraftwerk Tour De France sountracks CD
20 Silicone Soul A soul thing CD
21 Starsailor Starsailor CD
22 Weather Report Heavy weather CD
23 FooFoo and the Boy H2C Naim CD
24 Mark Knopfler Sailing to Philadelphia CD
25 Eric Bibb and Need Time Good stuff CD – Opus3cd19603

quite a bit of the above music brought along by the above was new to me, and everyone found something new to purchase afterwards judging from comments raised.

System tweaks included; re positioning of the SBL's, on the advice of Pete, generating calmer treble and mor 3d bass; LP12 install over the Linn Axis - no contest really.

Thanks to all the above players who came - Shelley and me had a really good time.

No doubt it won't be the last such evening,

You betcha we did.

My thanks to the hosts Andy & Shelley, excellent chile BTW, for making the evening possible. Great company and an interesting mix of music. And your system didn't sound half bad either Andy, especially after Cymbiosis Pete had repositioned your SBL's.

Can't wait for a repeat.

An excellent evening... Thanks to Andy and Shelley for hosting it. Great music, great food then more great music. I agree with Roger, Andy your system was in good shape but Cymbiosis Pete managed to drag more out of it. Is he good or what? Easy Pete don't let it go to your head now. Andy you will have to let us know how you get on with the SL2's and how they stack up against your current speakers.

I hope I got the music information about right!
P.S. At last I have found a reason for posting something on the Forum.

HI,
I just spent over £50 on various web sites after the above evening ordering some of the CD's played - ouch.
Still, its a cracking way to get to audition some stuff you have not even heard of, never mind listened to!

Nice to see 'Talk Talk' in the playlist, how did you guys rate that album?
I'm looking out for their work and any recommendations are much appreciated.

TIA

Hello Mat,

The Talk Talk was my choice! Colour of Spring is one of my all time favorite albums. I think the It's my life album is excellent too. Maybe I'm just showing my age but it was yours truly who had to play Sad Old Red from Simply Red's Picture Book too!
Anyway many thanks to Andy and Shelley for their hospitality, it was a great night and we must do it again soon.

Best regards,

Peter

P.S. Ernie, I think Loctite are developing some Superglue thinners? I'll try and buy a big bottle.

HI Ultra,
Yup each attendee brought along a cracking selection of Cd's/LP's and I think everyone got introduced to something new.

I ended up with about 6 new Cd's out of it, incl purchasing a far east import HDCD of Jazz at the pawnshop - which sounds mint thru the SL2's.

There is another in the pipeline - it's at the initial stages of organisation - at Roger 40's i believe - will report when more is known.

regards,

andy c!

PS has anyone listened to Jazz at the pawnshop 2 or 3?....
