Options ...

Hi there,

My first post here but hopefully not the last.

After a long desert crossing into AV land, I became bored and decided it's time to go back to 2 ch once again hoping to get the Music enjoyment I used to have with a Linn LP12/Ekos/Troika, Naim 32.5/HiCap/250, Linn Kan's which I regrettably sold twelve years ago along with all my LP collection.

No AV system I owned ever since could provide, not even remotely, the sort of musical pleasure I got from that kit and I simply have no interest in multichannel anymore ...

I also don't believe one should have more than one set of speakers in your hi-fi room so a multi-purpose system is out of the question being it Naim or whatever ... AV is AV and Stereo is Stereo ... period.

Now, I happen to know the local Naim distributor quite well (he heard his first Linn/Naim gear at my place long before both brands were officially available over here and he was so impressed with it, he managed to get their agency not too long after that experience !!!) and he's helping me out sorting what could be my next system.

Unfortunately, at the present moment my business is sort of in a stand still mode and I'm not really able to buy top of the range stuff so I'll have to compromise ..

I brought home the new Cd5i/Nait5i combo together with some Neat Mystique's speakers and I simply loved it !!! After all these years of Music starvation, this little kit gave me everything I was needing and hoping for .... great fun to listen to and in a word, just forget the hi-fi and listen to the Music !!

After that, he insisted I deserve better so he gave me the cd5/flatcap2/112/150 still with the Mystique's to try at home but to tell you the truth, this combo didn't really moved me ... I was not getting the same emotion and enjoyment I had from the previous system .... maybe better in hi-fi terms but not really as easy and comfortable as the starting one .... call me nuts but that is really my opinion ... have I gone deaf over the years ????

He's next option is to let me try an ex dem cd5/flatcap1/102/naps/Hicap/250 (recently serviced) but that's going to be more expensive than all the rest and maybe I shouldn't listen to it in case I like it too much and spend more than I'm prepared to ...

Should I stop now, forget it all and go for the the first kit I loved ?? I think so ..

What do you guys reckon ???

Regards from sunny Portugal

Cheers,

Pedro

You answer your own question.
Go for the 'I' series. it fits the budget and the sound you want.

Why make it difficult??

Just a thought...

but why not recreate your original system.

Hi ..

I guess I did answer my own question but, as you can understand, I needed a little reassurance ... you know how it works.

Anyway, I'm still going to go ahead and try the third option just for the sake of it and will post back my findings.

Thanks

Well Mike, used LP12's, Ekos, etc. don't really show up in this country and I'm not too keen on getting this kind of kit from epay, but having said that I would most certainly consider that option if I could find one here ...

Pedro,

Seeing as you like the CD5i/NAIT 5i, but looking for something a bit better, I'd go for a CDX2/NAIT 5i.

A source-first approach is far better than mating a CD5 with superior amplification.

Do whatever that make you happy. That is the most important. If you dont want to spend more money, stick with your first choice: nait5i and CD5i. Any other combination will start the upgrade path in the near future.

Kota! My principle:if the next step in upgrading is bringing factors that i do not like (except that it is always expensive)I return to the point where i started.I listen often to other systems than mine, and if ever i felt that there was something completly wrong in my system(what seems to be definitly not the case with your system) compared to other good sytems,i sold nearby my whole stuff.
Imo new speakers are always the most critical
component to choose because they work in three
directions:amp feedback;room;Your ears.
So my hint for everybody that is content with
his system(means:Feeling of good system-room-listener-match):Try source first upgrading.I also add pefect placement of components to source first thinking.if these steps are too expensive
for you at the moment:Buy and enjoy music, and
do the upgrades later on....and never leave your way O.J.

Hello,

Sound advice peeps ... thanks.

Yes source first but I can't really afford a CDX2 at the moment ... I've got other priorities unfortunately.

But as OJ says "buy and enjoy music, and
do the upgrades later on.... and never leave your way"

That makes sense to me and sums it all up ....

Cheers,

Welcome Pedro

This forum contains a wealth of knowledge from music lovers who appreciate the unique qualities of Naim equipment.

That said; we are not soothsayers and don't have all the answers - just personal opinions and practical experience.

Go with your gut instincts and what you hear. The Nait 5i uses lessons learned from the 112/150 and I'm not surprised that it seems to have a certain 'something' that the 112/150 does not (and I use a 112/150).

Good luck and happy listening.

Many thanks for the warm welcome, JN Smile

I thought it was customary for all new members to this forum to get it and was feeling a bit sad about it but you made my day !! (Joking, off course).

Believe you me. I will surely go with my ears and get whatever sounds best within my budget.

I think I'll just take advantage on my friendly dealer, hold down my horses and simply listen to all kind of gear (mainly old) he has in the shop and make my mind up .. I'm not in such a hurry and I still have to sell my AV stuff which will hopefully cover for the new system.

Wish me luck.

Regards,

Pedro
