Poor Alex G

Huh?

Met up with Alex G today, with the aim of of showing him a few of the local trails. Before we set out, we had a scary listen to the Nait1 versus the 72/hicap/180, which was a bit of an eye opener. Anyway, we then got the bikes out. We started off with the trail up from Coldean to Stamner Park, where we sessioned a few of the trails, both of us doing a couple of classic 'bollock to stem' stalls whilst riding off a tree stump, and Alex throwing himself over the bars a couple of times. We then did the run up from the uni sports centre to the SDW, over Blackcap, and on to the chalk pits.

For someone who’s new to riding tougher stuff, Alex had his brave trousers on. He rode the steep chute into the pit, and got some decent air off the jump on the left hand side. Unfortunately, following a fair old size leap, he stacked it. He landed, and the front end just went, and he went with it. He appeared to have snapped a middle finger on his right hand, just beneath the knuckle. It looked gruesome, and we had to call an ambulance. He headed off to the Sussex County Hospital, and I managed to talk a mate into driving me and the bikes back on his birthday.

Turns out, he is dead lucky, as it was 'just' dislocated. However, he's covered in cuts and bruises, his helmet is cracked, and his shin lost a fight with his DXs. He said he'll post when he gets home.

There was something wrong about the way the bike was landing from the start. When I was jumping, it seemed like the tire was flat, tho' when pressed, it felt at least 40psi. I guess the tire was just rolling on the rim, or something, but it was a mess in hard landings. Other than that tho', his Cove is stunning, with everything tight. Makes mine seem like a soggy mess in comparison.

Anyway, other than the accident, great fun. We've already talked about organising another ride, and hopefully dragging a few more people out next time.

It was quite warm and sunny during my lunch break and I was getting severe bike withdrawal symptoms. Talk of death defying leaps of death has quite put me off...

Ouch! If the accounting/stunt-riding don't work out, I'd look in to child-catching. I hope you heal quickly.

Dan - Erm, are they? Well, if they are, it's the drugs Alex was pumped full of that are to blame, as he told me to put it that way around when I balanced the x-ray on the window sill.

I think the X-rays are the right way round myself. It looks really painful.

Looks nasty. Hope you managed to get a few shots of morphine in hospital, almost makes damaging yourself worthwhile.

I suggest you take the recuperation time as an opportunity to listen to the Beatles back catalogue.

You certainly have my sympathy !

The pain does eventually subside....honest ! ( ....proberbly doesn't feel like it at the mo. ) Just keep up with the anti-inflammatories,they seemed to work better than just paracetamol

....says Chris,who is recovering from a couple of cracked ribs,a small hole in my leg where you could actually see the bone and various other bruises & cuts after attempting something rather similar a couple of weeks ago !

When your Cove and Alex's finger are both fixed, we' should sort out a ride. Maybe an Alex vs Matthew 'Cove King of Dirt' competition? Alex has to get back on the horse, after all.

Glad to hear you're OK, Alex, but can I ask a slightly off-topic question?

What is it about this forum and bikes? Everyone bangs on about bloody bicycles all the time. I can't think of anything more boring than riding bikes (especially in quarries and heavily-rutted woodland), other than talking about them.

Oh, and talking about hi-fi.
