I am flying out to the States (San Diego) on Saturday. Is there long queues to get through customs / immigration.

Suggestions for light reading reading before the trip.

TSA Home Page, A MUST read for anyone traveling by air and Permitted and Prohibited Items (pdf).

Remember if you have overstayed by even a little on a previous trip to the states they will not be ammused, they may also want a couple of your email addresses so that these can be run through a few of their databases.

Have a nice day Big Grin

I'm sure there are some Forum members out there who would be happy to provide you with some worthwhile reading material for the flight, something along the lines of: how to tweak one's hifi system to the nth degree, or: how to ditch the Daily Mail and three easy steps, etc.

Have a nice trip!

Reading the horror stories of long queues, surly immigration staff and the prospect (however remote) of having an invalid passport/visa makes me wonder why anyone would even bother going to the States?

We flew into Tampa from Gatwick on the 20th May - no delays at either immigration or customs - I had to wait a few minutes for my pre ordered car to be ready

However I am concerned at the time for the security checks at Miami for the flight to Chicago next week.

However there has beenreports that the security people are being moved to busy airports

Mick,

The last two time I went through US immigration and Customs it took one and a half hours! This was just queueing and nothing more.

You will need to allow for a similar time on your return journey for the security checks. These vary from non existent to very thourough. I do not know about San Diego as all of my travels have been to the east or mid US.

Enjoy the holiday.

If a chap were to wear the finest tooled and snuggest the fitting of leather chaps would other chaps in uniforms then look favourable upon his request for entry in to the USA?

The reason for asking is that we have to fly to America and go through their customs etc and then the next day, we have to go through the same labourious procedure for booking onto a cruiser.

We have been advised that 3 hours is the going rate to get through the cruiser check out.

I expect to be spending a lot of time just standing and waiting.

I assume you going to be leaving US territory pretty much immediately on the cruise?

You should check if you should fill in a differnent entry form for someone who is "IN TRANSIT". I don't think it will speed it up at all but I have a feeling the paperwork is slightly different and it is best to check.

At the end of the cruise will you also be "in transit" or will you be staying in teh US for a few days? Fill in the right paperwork at the end of the cruise based on which applies.
