SBLs - a little bit of advice please

Posted by: MichaelC on 03 May 2004

I am hoping to take delivery either later this week or early next week of one of the last SBLs.

I am experiencing a slow connection to Infopop at the moment and wondered if anyone could provide a quick link to any threads on setting up SBLs. Alternatively, any advice or tips will be greatfully received.

Thanks

Do you have a local Naim dealer with experience of setting up SBL's?

If so; pay him to get you a gasket kit and do the job, when you've decided where you want them.

Only the experienced ear and hand will know if they are 'right'.

Enjoy their magic.

I would second the option of getting the dealer to do the job. I lived very happily for about 3 years after new drivers were fit. THen I blew a driver and had to replace again. The re-seal job I managed to do the second time around must have been bang on because the sound I was getting was the best I have ever heard from the SBL, going far beyond what I would expect from new drive units.

I think the key thing I had got wrong the first time around was I pushed down too hard on the bass cabs thus linking them a bit too much to the bass chamber.

Anyway I am sure you will love them, best wishes, Gary,

Hi,

Only thing I'd add is re the aluminium pads that are fixed to the bottom of the sealed bass unit, than in effect sit on the upward spikes. I recently got to the stage where I had to replace these.

Tom Alves suggested that the glue on the pads was strong enough to hold them to the unit, without the use of staples.

He was right, but I did lose two of them due to the glue not being strong enough. I did have plenty of spare pads around so this was not too much of an issue to me. It is something to bear in mind tho.

one of the best tips I learned on the Forum was that after re-making the silicone seal you must not play the system for 24 hours. The other day you better play it only at moderate volume. Explanation, as usual, is missing but it works.

Another tip: Try playing around with the tightness of the screws that hold the tweeter cabinet arms to the frame on the back of the main cabinet. I used to tighten them as much as I could, but loosening them made the SBLs sound more natural and less forward (in my system).
