Dusty, old Mac - that doesn't bloody print - Help!

Posted by: Alex S. on 23 June 2004

At home I have a pink dinosaur DVD iMac with an Epson Unstylish 740. I've tried for 2 hours now to print something. Initially I got nowt - I've crashed the Chooser 12 times already. Now I have the following progress: I can 'choose' the 740 and the USB 1 port. I can run a 'nozzle check'. I can get a 'now spooling doc' message. But that's as far as I get. The spooling message just disappears and nothing happens.

Any help from Mac gurus or iGary very much appreciated.

Alex

PS I've reinstalled the 740 software about 8 times.

Alex,

Check the version of the Mac OS you are using and that it is compatible with your printer software. Also, perhaps there is a font-related issue to deal with.

Failing all that, try re-installing the software for a 9th time! Smile

Alex --

Try installing latest drivers for the 740 (from Epson's website).

"Chooser". Hmmm. OS 9.x. Newer drivers may not be available for OS 9. OS X.1 onwards comes with Epson drivers pre-installed. If you've got OS X installed try booting into that and seeing if it'll print from there.

Cheers,

Tim

Thanks,

No OSX yet although I may throw this in a skip and get another eMac.

Printer did work fine for about three years. I installed Epson C62 software not so long ago - could this screw things up?

How do I identify font realted issues?

Downloading anything via AOL and a 56K modem is a matter of last resort . . .

Alex in the system folder I believe is a printer folder which may have a dodgy temp file, try dumping that and restarting.

When did the problem first occur?

Man I feel like a quack.

Gary, you're a genius! I trawled round the system folder and found a suspicious looking 'spool folder', I dumped that and everything works for now, apart from having no ink.

Can't help you there except to get a canon i560, apart from having the obligatory 'i' it also is very cheap on carts, a genuine replacement black for instance is 7 quid, and from choicestationary.com its 2 quid.

Lovely.
