INTERPOL-ANTICS

Already mention by some of the old lags, Antics is the second album from New York band Interpol.

This recording builds on the style of the first album “Turn on the Bright Lights”, drawing influences from Joy Division, but in my opinion sounding more like Lou Reed or VU. The sound remains beautifully stripped, wordy, un-emotional, with audible bass lines on some of the tracks. The lyrics have that fabulous characteristic of incorporating everyday language and phrases into the songs – hard to explain until you’ve heard it !

My wife thought the vocals on one track sounded like Michael Stipe, and I understand he has recently covered an Interpol track but I wouldn’t have made the comparison myself. I do hear echoes of Midnight Oil in some of the tracks, but that’s probably just me.

Here is a link to their website. In the past they’ve been generous with free music downloads, but while that’s no longer the case, you can click “VIDEO” and listen to the current single “Slow Hands”. If you are simply interested in Web Site design it’s also worth a look for a lesson in style and simplicity.

I’ve listened to this album over the last few weeks, and after a slow start is the most compelling music that I’ve heard all year. I highly recommend it and nominate it as my best album of 2004.

This CD is definitely a grower.

The Joy Division references are very clear, but also Television and other New Wave guitar groups. The mix is very bass & guitar prominent. The vocalist's inflections remind me of someone (not just Ian Curtis), especially when he pronouces 'Hand' (in Slow Hand). Now who is it?
