Country flags - where to get them?
Posted by: Hammerhead on 09 June 2004
OK, so every one expects of the England squad come Euro 2004 (Except for Steve G of course ) and all the native yoof, cabbies and white van drivers are now zooming about the roads with there George crosses all a flutter.
I fancy stirring it up a bit. Anyone know where I can purchase say, a Dutch/German/Swedish/blah de blah flag I can attach just for badness?
Yup, I know I could end up heading for a kicking from a bunch of moronic thugs but this George cross stuff really is a load of old bollox.
Come on da Irish! Or something.

That won't give you much time to get each of them in for a week's trial.

Very true, Tom. I'm not convinced that that Figo fella is in the same league as Neil Lennon.

It made me wonder what sort of person accuses of people with flags of being "casual rascists" but feels happy using the racial epithet "pikey" in doing so.

He's certainly nowhere near as handsome.

Al4n/Matthew, I'm sorry if that offended you.
My appologies.

Hypocrit.

Brian -- I thought it was quite funny and not offensive at all if it hadn't been for the p*k*y reference. If anything I'd have thought you might have found it offensive as the p word was widely used to abuse Irish immigrants into the UK in the 50s and 60s.
Long-time-dead -- Are you saying the poster is hypocritical (I agree) or that I am for having previously had a bit of banter with the Scots (in which case I think you are being a bit silly).

Yes, I know the history Matthew, been called it a few times myself, back in the day. I think however, that the original meaning has been lost over time and morphed into something less about race and more about social class (my opinion).

What strange people you are!
Mathew, have a look at the Ian Flanagan stuff on the BBC sport web site for the most recent evidence. You might also want to work backwards on various web sites re: the Republic. It's not a feeling it's a verifiable fact and has been for many, many years. It's amazing how these 'accidental' things go on for years!!!
Simons' reassurance means nothing simply because, within the media, my workplace, my partners workplace etc. etc. etc. that is simply not what happens. If you want evidence there's plenty out here on the web.
What is really interesting here is the stuff about not noticing. It isn't "expectation bias" at all. I was aware of anti-Welsh media bias when I lived in Wales. When I moved to England it was unavoidable. However, the media bias is reflected in the attitudes of English people in general and the fact is that people really do believe that they have supported the Scots and Irish etc. in situations when they have done nothing of the sort.
Indeed, the last English person who said this to me (this morning) was somewhat contrite when I pointed out that their support amounted to no more than not watching any of the games but hoping they'd win "because they're British" and yet their expectation of me as a Welsh person was that there would be something wrong with me (and I was being somewhat unpatriotic) if I din't sit down and watch tonights' game. Very odd indeed. Actually, par for the course.
My English work colleagues were genuinely perplexed when I pointed out the Flanagan stuff on the BBC website within seconds of being asked for an example. The English genuinely don't believe such bias exists and when confronted with it they simply ask for more evidence.
As an example go trawl for reporting of the last Welsh world cup campaign and count the references to British up to and including the Italy win. As the injuries took their toll and the results dived all of a sudden the English media suddenly accepted that we were Welsh again.
PS: Mathew, I suspect you are as grumpy as me but you forever have my admiration for simply saying, on a certain other thread, the truth about the Pixies. There are too many sycophants around here who will worship something simply because it exists.
Steve G. - The great thing about Hartson is that twenty years ago we would have needed him to beat the Scots. Nowadays... well I suspect those chants of "Are you Azerbaijan in disguise?" were the lowest many Scots have been for some time.
Having said that, I really think that all you lack is a fast striker and an organising defender.
Anyway, allez les vertes!!!

Mike,
The first piece on Flanagan's victory I found http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/3793429.stm which says:
"Britain's Ian Flanagan has missed out on a Wimbledon wildcard despite reaching the last 16 at the Stella Artois Championships at Queen's.
The 22-year-old Welshman beat Mark Philippoussis and Victor Hanescu before losing to Sebastien Grosjean.
"I was hoping for a wild card having had a great week and having put so much into every element of my game over the last 18 months," said Flanagan.
The world number 866 has received a wildcard into Wimbledon qualifying.
Fellow Britons Jonathan Marray, Arvind Parmar, Mark Hilton and Richard Bloomfield have received wildcards into Wimbledon, guaranteeing them at least £9,040.
Parmar earned his place in the year's third Grand Slam by winning the Lawn Tennis Association's wildcard play-off on Friday, beating Hilton in the final.
Bloomfield beat Andrew Banks in the third-fourth place play-off to claim another place."
It refers to him as "Britain's Ian Flanagan" and then as a "22 year old Welshman". Is this evidence of bias? I mean he is British and it did say he was Welsh so I am not sure what you expect. Should the BBC not say he was British? Should they equally insist on calling Tim Henman English rather than British?
Or are there other links you can provide?
And my point about expectation bias is that you, being Welsh and obvisouly concerned about this issue, cannot form a realistic judgement of the BBC's output. It *will* seem obviously biased to you even if it was perfectly even-handed, and you would need to do a proper study to demonstrate that there was a problem.
Matthew
PS I wanted the Welsh to beat Italy but only becuase I had £20 on them. Otherwise I don;t really care either way.

At the time I was quite happy that Wales thumped us as I expected it to be another nail in the coffin of Bertie Vogts - the worst football manager in the world. Unfortunately however our recent defeat of the mighty Trinidad and Tobago reserve team seems to have ensured his survival for now.
What I did find really upsetting about the game though was the venue. Wales have a magnificent stadium where as we have the national disgrace that is Hampden Park, a stadium significantly smaller than the ground of one of our club teams and a souless dump as well.

Steve,
I honestly didn't think you were as bad as the result suggested. We had Earnie and it's only just beginning to dawn how good he could be. You just need a striker and a fast thinking organiser at the back and sometimes these things don't come along when you want to. What amazed me that night was the number of Scots who walked out. I'd never have expected them to do that.
I think I speak for most Welsh people when I say that we can't really believe that we have the Millenium Stadium. I have been there many times and it never ceases to make me gawp. However, Scotland do have a number of good class stadiums and Wales has just the one. That can make quite a difference. If proposals re: the Racecourse Ground occur then North Wales will have no international venue at all.
Trinidad and Tobago reserves? Careful now. That was Carlos Edwards on the right. The best right wing back outside of the Premiership.

BTW is there any truth that the England fans were singing "Are you Scotland in Disguise" last night?
Posted on: 15 June 2004 by Mike Hughes
Yes, you could clearly hear them on TV.
