The Who - Encore Live CD
Posted by: Misguided Fool on 11 June 2004
Went watching The Who last night in Cardiff. Must say that Rock Music doesn't get much better than it was last night. Absolutely fantastic.
My question is has anyone got any experience of the Encore Live CDs that are being produced of the concerts? I have ordered the Cardiff show this morning, it should be with me in 4 to 5 weeks.
I noticed from the website (
www.themusic.com) that Peter Gabriel and Duran Duran are doing the same thing.
It seems like a really good idea to me, it's also nice that the procedes are going to charity.

I got one of the March concerts and it's excellent. One of the best live recordings I've ever heard.

It's a real shame they haven't done this with their 1996 Quadrophenia tour. I've got a couple of bootlegs from that and they're incredibly good.

Tom,
You've changed your tune a little. Glad to see you've come to my way of thinking
Mark,
I was there on the first night at The Forum in March and it was the best concert I've ever been to. I bought the cd from that night and it really is the best live cd I have. Unedited, full of atmosphere and recorded superbly.
P.S. I'm usually reserved and I don't exaggerate. Good night.
P.P.S. First time I've used one of those crappy smiley things. That's how passionate I am about this cd.

Don't think so. I enjoyed it when I got it (I'm a long term Who fan which is why I may have seemed over-critical). On the initial scan through there were a couple of things that jarred e.g. the intros to Substitute and Baba O'Reilly. Once I'd listened to it properly (i.e. sober!) it was obviously a fine album although not in the class of Live at Leeds. I've just listened to the first disc and Roger's vocals are far far better than they've any right to be.
As an aside I was going to order one of the 2002 series because the Ox was still with them but when I double checked I found he died almost 2 years ago, on June 27th 2002, just before that tour took place. Couldn't believe it. How time flies and what a sad loss.
RIP JH.

I've been a Who fan for the last 35 years. The 2nd abum I ever bought was the Who's Next in 1972, and it's still my favourite rock album.
I recently caught up with the Live and Leeds and Who's Next deluxe editions, which are recent re-masterings, with an extra CD of live performances from that time on them and they really are superb.
Can't say that I really want to hear the Who live without Moonie and the Ox though.

I'm just feeling that way. I don't know why.

Colin,
I understand how you feel but I think you might be quite pleasantly surprised if you were to hear them now. Roger's voice is in better shape than it's been for many years and they tend to have a first class bunch of musicians supporting them.

I think I'm with Colin on this one. The WHO without Moonie I can just about get my head around, but without the OX as well...? IMHO these two were the engine room/powerhouse of the band.

Oh you lucky souls over there in Britain who had easy access to them live. I heard the Who's early albums in the 60s and fell in love with Majic Bus. Then I bought Who's Next when I moved to California at 16 and was really blown away. In college I had a roomie that had seen them twice perform in Denver. I've never experienced them live. But I too want the original lineup, but that won't happen anytime soon. Great group!!!
