Tracking down electrical interference?

Posted by: Paul Hutchings on 18 December 2004

I've noticed lately that every day (well, those that I've been in) there's an audible buzzing/humming that comes from my speakers at around 3.45pm that lasts until around 4.15pm (never actually timed it as I tend to notice it's there and then notice it's gone).

I'm sure it's nothing in our house, the heating/water timers aren't set for those times and there's nothing else that I can think of on any form of timer.

Any suggestions on simple ways to try and trace what's doing it?

My system is a Nait5/CD5/Hi-Cap/Intros plugged into a cheap mains gang, plugged into a standalone socket which I think is on the same ring as everything else that's upstairs.

It isn't the end of the world but it would be nice to know what/why it is happening, and if anything can be done about it sensibly or cheaply.

cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul
Just a couple of thoughts, you could go around your property and turn everything off you can find but leave the system on only to see if its still there, what type of property are you in? Could it be the flat above, below, next door, are you next to anything industrial? We had some interference on some medical electronics in a hospital that turned out to be coming from some elevator switch gear and motors, they seem very noisy.
