Ted Stevens - Evil Empire speech

Posted by: Dobbin on 09 June 2004

I'm just watching the Reagan funeral on TV and have been incensed by Stevens speech after what has been a very dignified farewell to Nancy's husband and a US president.

However do all US citizens really believe Russia to have been the Evil Empire as Stevens clearly said (or read from his script in a particularlly inarticulate way)?

Futhermore Dennis Hastert quickly followed with the usual history re-write of D-day with America being the sole contributor to victory in Europe.

No wonder we have the mess in the Middle East if these people are turning the handles.

Me I can't wait to cast my vote later this morning.....the more we distance ourselves in the UK from these morons the better.

So Dobbin, tell me how you might vote to distance us from the US?
I voted Green today, and that is the first time I have ever done anything like that before!

The USSR was an evil empire. There's obviously no formal ranking for these but let's say on a par with the Nazis.

On a ranking with Nazi Germany under Stalin but merely run-of-the-mill brutal, oppressive dictatorship from Krushchev on I think.

In terms of empire (as in foreign policy) its major post-war contribution was the Cold War and it that respect it was very little different from the US.
