Canon EOS 20D
Posted by: Squonk on 31 October 2004
Well it has been an expensive month what with buying my new CDX2, 282, 250.2 and Hi Cap, so I thought I might as well go and finish things off properly so I went out and bought the new Canon EOS 20D SLR camera.
Wow, what a fantastic (and I truly mean that) piece of kit - it is just awesome.
This afternoon I was down by Sydney Harbour and I fired off some three hundred photos on it of the kids and harbour traffic. Using the sports mode was amazing as I captured the speed boats powering across the water - 5 pictures per second.
I cannot wait to learn more about this machine - the picture output on my computer is first class.
This is the best camera I have ever seen - worth every penny.
Cheers

Im very green!! i bought the 10D about three months ago for a trip to Canada and i found it to be superb... Im gutted its out of date already!? Im even thinking of upgrading to the 20D but im telling myself some decent lenses would be a good move.. What lenses are you using? Im using a cheapie sigma 18-50mm DC and a 75-300 Canon lense from my old EOS SLR and although im getting reasonable results (to my eyes) i fancy one of the IS (image stabilisation) lenses..

Neil - I'm using my Canon EF 28-200 Ultrasonic lense and I have to say the results are fabulous.
The great thing about using it on the digital camera (well I think so) is that the digital multiplies it by 1.6 so it is now a 45-320 lense.
The camera came with an 18-55 lense that now fills in the gap left by the 1.6 maginifcation of the other lense.
Got to get my XPS2 next and some new SL2s, then I will start to attack the Canon lenses.
Cheers

Hi .
I already own afew canon lenses for my 35mm EOS, so I am considering purchasing a Canon digital.Question ,I am going to Australia for Xmas ,would I be better off buying here (France or the U.K.),Singapore or Australia? I think tourists get their tax back on purchases in Australia. Also I am a little bit out of touch here in rural France ,is the 20D replcement for the 10D?

Dave,
The 20D is the replacement for the 10D and there are a lot of improvements over the 10.

You can get the 20D for 2700 Oz dollars although they are hard to get hold of here at the moment - this includes a basic lens. You would get 10% tax back at the airport on the way home.
Look at the link here to Ted's cameras in Oz.

I would think Singapore would be the cheapest. The only thing is that it might be best to have it all set up and ready to go before you travel so that you can start snapping as soon as you arrive. You will absolutely love it.

You could probably get a very good deal on a 10D, but if money is no object i would go for the 20D as it is a better camera.. my biggest frustration with the 10D is that it downloads using USB1 not the much faster USB2 that the 20D uses.. Waiting for 300 high res photos to download is a bit of a drag.. but well worth it when you see the results though.. In the UK the cheapest ive seen the 20D is £1059 and you should be able to pick up a 10D around the £800 to £900 mark.. both prices body only.. The lenses i used with my EOS 300 35mm work fine with the 10D and as Adrian says they are factored up by 1.6 which is handy if you use telephoto's
Adrian
Your right, the sports mode is great, the focus is so quick compared to my 300 and the way it tracks makes catching my 4 year old on the move a breeze!

Hawk,
You can take the stotage card out and use an external card`reader that runs in USB 2 if you want to speed downloading up. I reckon you should be able to pick up a "hot swappable" USB2 Universal Card reader for about 20 -25 GBP in the UK.
Incidentally you guys are all raving about the 10D/20D . I have the 300D which takes all the same lenses (I use a 28 - 150mm and 100 - 300mm along with the supplied extra widefield lens) and costs roughly half what a 20D costs. You are talking 6.3 Mpixels vs 8.3 but in RAW format I defy anybody to be upset by the resolution of the images off the 300D.
Of course it does'nt have all the bells and whistles but it does have all the modes.I bought one when I was in the US and got it for 750 US $ (500 GBP) including a 1GB storgae card.
I reckon it's worth a look unless you are an action shot freak who needs continuous shooting.
regards
GEOFF

10Ds are coming down. Still a very good camera. I'm not tempted to chop mine in for a 20D although it's obviously a smashing bit of kit which addresses some of the 10's gaps. Well done Ardian - very tasty.

Hi Adrian
Many Thanks for your input. It looks a brilliant piece of kit.The price differance between Aussy and Singapore is a close run thing because of the tax back.I have been Googling to find a dealer in Perth to no avail.
My first week is in Perth then a few days in Adalaide followed by 5 days in Cairns then back to Perth for a Month .Once again thanks for your help.

If you are intending to use a laptop you could also use a PCMCIA adaptor for your memory card.
