organic LED

One for the techies...

Has anyone seen OLED technology in the flesh and is it superior to CRT or LCD technology for something like, oh, I dunno, Photoshopping?

The reason I'm asking is that Apple is rumoured to be using OLED, instead of LCD, in their next gneration of flat-panel displays, and Apple displays are among the best, so...

Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

If you check out the newest car audio headunits, the higher priced units use the organic displays. Not a huge screen, but at least it will give you an idea of the display quality and you can compare it to the traditional displays.

BTW, congrats on the upcoming addition to the family.

Thanks, Arun. The big event is only 4.5 weeks away, so not much longer now.

Head units, eh? So no experience with a computer display using OLEDs?

So we can expect version 2.0 of Mick Parry's head pasted on Jabba the Hutt around August, then?

As far as I'm aware, there are no consumer monitors using OLED yet. Everyone's still banging away with <12ms LCD.

Kodak has a digicamera that employs an OLED...

I read a technical explanation of the product about a year ago where it was stated that the ultimate goal for OLED was to be able to produce it in sheets like plywood but very thin and flexible, and cheap. It could then be shipped to custom distributors who could cut, fit, and install the stuff anywhere, on flat surfaces, convex, concave, even right around pillars. You could just slap a piece any size on a wall and have it become a video panel. It was this market that seemed to be the most exiting to the developers. I guess we will see what happens. We can put a man on the moon, but can't make batteries that last but a few hours. Confused
