MP3's - How?
Posted by: Steve O on 05 November 2004
Well time to lay my ignorance bare to all.
I've just replaced my holiday portable CD player and it plays MP3's. Only trouble is I don't know where to get them or what to do with them once I have them.
Could anyone offer some tips please.
Thanks in advance.

The honest way is to import your own CDs to a computer convert to MP3s and stuff a load on a CD.
The dishonest way is to download limewire

Maria,
Basicaly I'm completely in the dark where MP3's are concerned. I've heard of them, but thats where it ends. And if my new portable wasn't MP3 compatible I wouldn't be thinking about it now.
I don't know if I pay to download them or whether they're free (though I'm pretty sure you get nothing for free). Will I notice a huge difference to CD?
I presently take around 12-20 CD's on holiday. It would be a great idea to convert some to MP3 and burn onto just 1 disc. But again, I don't know how.
I'll probably think about it for a while and then stick to what I know, unless somebody can show how painless it could be.
Again, thanks in advance.

sorry Gary, but this is also illegal in the UK. The only 'honest' way is to buy them from an online provider.
As if...
Steve, download this ripper. install, stick in a music cd and it will create your mp3s. Assemble about 10 cds worth of mp3s (whatever it takes to make around 700Mb) and burn them onto a new cd. Stick this cd into your mp3 player.

John
Can you elaborate on the "The only 'honest' way is to buy them from an online provider. " ?
I have only ever made compilations from Album / CD that I own. Was under the impression that this was ok as I had already purchased the music. May be different on your side of the pond?
Don't quite make sense to me....
regards,
michael

under UK copyright laws you're NOT entitled to make a copy for personal use. Not sure about Canada but in the US is legal so you can always cross the border to make your copies
and no, it doesn't make sense but that's the music industry for you. Of course it will only be a problem if someone gets bored enough to start policing it.

You can download MP3s legally and free from many places. It's just that the music available might not always be what you want to listen to. A good place to start is: Amazon.
As for copying your own CDs, I suspect most people would argue that it is morally justified because it does not deprive the record company of income they might otherwise have had. It certainly seems, to me, more justifiable than recording music from the radio (other than for time-shifting).

Thanks to everybody that posted helpful replies. The CD to MP3 route looks favourite at the moment and is one I will be investigating further.
Regards,
Steve O.
PS
Garyi, if I wanted an ipod then I'd buy one. All I wanted to do was explore an avenue opened by my newly purchased portable. If you can't be constructive I'd really appreciate it if you stayed quiet.

Steve I was only playing no need to get your knickers in a twist.
However you can download itunes from the apple store which is free and will rip CDs, you can then simply drag them out of itunes into your MP3 player, which ever ones you want.
