Steve Lacy - Evidence ; Mal Waldron - The Quest

I recently picked up these two releases. They are both older Japanese lp pressings (Victor Music Industries, Inc.). Both have fntastic sound quality which surpasses the original lp releases on NEW JAZZ (Notoriously bad pressings). The lp covers are beautiful reproductions of the originals with the textured front covers. Fantastic session that were a joy to hear.

Does anybody know when these were pressed? Or when Victor was issuing lps from the Prestige/NEW JAZZ catalogue.

Either way, if you are a fan of Steve Lacy (R.I.P.), Eric Dolphy, Don Cherry, Ron Carter, Roy Haynes or Mal Waldron you should check out theses recordings. They are easily available on cd (Original Jazz Classics OJC).

Don't know the answer to your question, but they're both very fine records for sure.

Lacy/Waldron Live at Dreher, Paris 1981, originally issued by HatHut, recently reissued by hatOLOGY on a 4 CD box, is stunning, highly recommended.

Reports suggest that he left his adopted cultural homeland, Paris, and returned to the United States because he allegedly owed the French authorities thousands in back taxes.

What a shame.

Untrue as far as I know. I saw a solo concert of his at a small church in San Francisco shortly after he left France. He did a dedication to a friend who had been murdered in Paris. He claimed that this as well as dimishing opportunities to play were his reasons for leaving. I'll take his word for it.

I can recommend Lacy's 'The Forest and the Zoo" as well and also an album he did with Maarten van Regteren Altena in 1978, (MRA on bass) called 'High, Low and Order'. That is on Claxon Records, a Dutch label.
